GALAX PULLS AWAY FROM CARROLL COUNTY

Tito Crockett hit seven of eight free throws in the fourth quarter as Galax pulled away from Carroll County for a 61-51 non-district victory Friday night in boys' basketball.

The Maroon Tide (2-0) made 15 of 23 free throws in the game's final four minutes. Galax led by seven in the fourth quarter, but the Cavaliers managed to cut the lead to three late in the game.

The Maroon Tide's Jeff Ross finished with 13 points, but fouled out to aid the Cavaliers' cause. But Carroll County (0-1) was charged with a costly technical foul in the closing minutes.

Sean Baker, who had just come in to replace Ross, hit two free throws and the Maroon Tide hit the front end of a one-and-one to push the lead back to six and never was threatened again.

Crockett scored nine of his team-high 16 points in the second half to lead Galax. Carroll County got a game-high 21 points from Anthony Thomas and 14 from Matt Larrowe.

PEARISBURG - Junior center John King scored five of Giles' 10 points in overtime as the Spartans rallied to defeat the Eagles in a non-district game.

Giles (1-0) scored the first eight points in overtime to take command of the game and held Rocky Gap to three points in the extra period.

The Eagles (1-1) led 43-27 in the third quarter before Giles rallied. King, who finished with 20 points, and Josh Stephens, who scored 12 of his 18 in the second half, led the charge.

Robbie Claytor made two free throws with 12 seconds left to put Giles up 66-63, but Tracy Bradshaw, who scored 16 points, hit a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime.

Kelly Dehart scored a game-high 22 points to lead Rocky Gap. Eric Faulkner and Will Dodson added 10 each for the Eagles.

Giles got 13 points from Aaron Myers.

CHRISTIANSBURG - Ryan Gordon scored 10 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter as the Crusaders downed Greater Beckley Christian Academy in a non-district game.

Gateway Christian (2-2) outscored Greater Beckley 14-8 in the second quarter on the way to building a 26-18 lead.

Greater Beckley Christian (0-4) cut its deficit to four in the fourth quarter, but the Crusaders hit their free throws to pull away.

Allen Surface scored 12 for Gateway Christian and Jay Perfater added 12.

Scott Johnson had 23 for Greater Beckley Christian.

The Golden Eagles (2-1, 2-1) took a 25-16 halftime lead and Jefferson Forest (1-2, 1-2) never got any closer.

Cornelieus Fox pumped in 13 points and Jeff English added 11 for Staunton River.

Jimmy Gillespie led the Cavaliers with 17 points, including three from 3-point range.

BLACKSBURG - Phillip Claus scored 12 of his team-high 20 points in the second half to lead the Indians past the Bulldogs in a non-district game.

Blacksburg (1-1) led by two at halftime, but pulled away by outscoring Tazewell 16-11 in the fourth quarter. Jon Hutchins aided the Indians' cause by scoring eight of his 14 in the second half.

The Bulldogs (1-2) got a game-high 24 points from Kondwani Patterson, who scored 15 of those in the second half.

The Indians' Tony Wheeler saw his first action after sitting out the football season due to a serious shoulder injury.

Autumn Alexander scored 15 for the Cougars (1-0), Jodie Howlett and Kim Cruise had 12, Kara Buckner scored 11 and Mandy Sexton added 10.

LEXINGTON - Giving Parry McCluer numerous second shots was no way for Rockbridge County to win its first boys' basketball game on Friday.

The Blues, using a powerful inside game and a bevy of offensive rebounds, overwhelmed the Wildcats 85-39 in the season opener for Rockbridge County.

Parry McCluer, the group A runner-up last season, improved to 4-0 with the non-district win. The Blues outscored Rockbridge County 66-28 in the final three quarters.

Five Blues scored in double figures, led by Brandon Garrett's 22 points. Mike McElroy and David Coleman each scored 16 and Shawn Sorrells added 10.

Rob Hoyle, Brian Ross, and Jaymie Terrell each scored nine points for the Wildcats.

RINGGOLD - Tyree Hairston hurt the Wildcats early and late, scoring 10 points in the first quarter and 12 in the fourth as the Bengals held on for their first win of the season in the Piedmont District.

Hairston, who finished with a game-high 34 points, hit four crucial free throws in the final two minutes after Dan River had cut the Bengals' lead to three.

Bassett (1-2, 1-2) led 16-8 after the first quarter and never trailed.

Anthony Fitzgerald led the Wildcats with 21 points, including four 3-pointers.

Fort Chiswell (1-1, 1-0) continually worked the ball inside to Burnett and outscored Rural Retreat (0-2, 0-1) by 12 in the second quarter to take a 41-27 halftime lead.

T.J. King added 17 points for the Pioneers. W.K. Smith paced the losers with 22, while Steven May had 18.

Led by David Buzzard's career high seven steals, the Chargers took the ball away from the Green Hornets a Bathy County-record 21 times. Seven Bath players combined for eight 3-pointers, also a school record.

Patrick Lennon led all scorers with 16 points and Jon Rogers added another 14 for the Chargers.

Law finished with 23 points, three 3-pointers and three steals for Fieldale-Collinsville (3-0, 3-0). Brian Alley scored 14 and Brad Harmon added 10.

MARTINSVILLE - Michael Martin's basket with five seconds left lifted Martinsville past Gretna in a Seminole District game.

Gretna had taken a 54-52 lead late in the game, but Martin hit a basket to tie the score at 54. After Gretna failed to score on its next possession, Martin hit the game-winner for the Bulldogs (3-0, 3-0). The senior scored six of Martinsville's eight fourth-quarter points and finished with a team-high 18.

Gretna had a chance to tie after calling a timeout, but the Hawks threw the ball away as the clock ran out. William Merritt scored a game-high 23 to lead Gretna.

STUART - Ronta Davis scored on an offensive rebound from 12 feet away with two seconds left in the second overtime as the Lancers nipped the Cougars in the Piedmont District.

With the scored tied at 70, Laurel Park (4-0, 4-0) had the ball with 10 seconds to play after a Patrick County miss at the free-throw line. Davis, who finished with 10 points, grabbed a missed shot and banked it in just before the buzzer.

The shot capped a fourth-quarter comeback for Laurel Park, which trailed 46-38 after three quarters. The Lancers got the ball inside in the fourth, where Corey Wilson and Warrick Scott were able to convert a pair of three-point plays.

Scott finished with 20 points. Jerrard Foster had 13 points, while Corey Wilson added 11 and Darrell Wilson 10.

Wes Jones scored 24 points for Patrick County (2-1, 2-1), which had a chance to win at the end of regulation but could not convert. Brian Hylton had 13 points and Ray Hylton finished with 10.

Both teams scored six points in the first overtime period and the Lancers outscored the Cougars 8-6 in the second overtime.

LOW MOOR - Donnie Costigan scored 16 points and Rashad Worth added 15 as Alleghany (2-1) escaped a second-half Cave Spring (1-2) comeback to down the Knights in non-district action.

Doug Cullinan led Cave Spring's comeback with 12 points, nine coming in the second half. The reserve, who had not played all season, hit three 3-pointers during a stretch in which the Knights cut the Mountaineers lead from 18 points in the third quarter to two.

Cave Spring's John Finnerty missed a layup with 90 seconds left and the Knights trailing by two. Cave Spring was forced to foul and Alleghany connected on its free throws to ice the victory.

Costigan and Worth combined for four Alleghany 3-pointers. James Hughes scored 12 points and Shrell Bolden tossed in 11 to aid the Mountaineers, who avenged an 80-66 loss to Cave Spring a week ago.

Matt Matheny led the Knights with 13 points and Dusty Beekman added 10 points in the loss.
