LIBERTY PRESSES PAST ALTAVISTA

Raymond Arrington scored a team-high 13 points Friday night to help Liberty hand Seminole District rival Altavista its first loss of the season, pounding the Colonels 69-42.

Arrington scored eight of his 13 in the first half, but the Minutemen (2-1 overall, 2-1 Seminole) broke open the game in the second half by using defensive pressure to outscore the Colonels 35-17.

Gregg Reynolds scored 12 points for Liberty - 10 in the second half to lead the charge.

Altavista (3-1, 3-1) got 10 points from Brian Clark.

LOW MOOR - Donnie Costigan scored 16 points and Rashad Worth added 15 as the Mountaineers (2-1) held off a second-half comeback to down the Knights (1-2) in non-district action.

Doug Cullinan led Cave Spring's comeback, scoring nine of his 12 points in the second half. With the Knights down by 18 in the third, Cullinan, who had not played all season, came off the bench and hit three 3-pointers, eventually cutting the Mountaineers' lead to two points late in the game.

With 90 seconds on the clock and Cave Spring down by two, the Knights' John Finnerty missed a layup and Cave Spring was forced to foul. Alleghany connected on its free throws and iced the victory.

Costigan and Worth combined for four 3-pointers for the Mountaineers. James Hughes scored 12 points and Shrell Bolden tossed in 11 to aid Alleghany, which avenged an 80-66 loss to the Knights a week ago.

Matt Matheny led Cave Spring with 13 points and Dusty Beekman added 10 points.

DALEVILLE - The Cavaliers hit 82.3 percent from the floor in the second half to pull away and beat the pesky Knights in a non-district game.

Leading 27-26 at halftime, Lord Botetourt hit 14 of 17 shots in the final 16 minutes to defeat its county neighbor. The Cavaliers (2-1) hit 22 of 41 field-goal attempts.

Shannon Williams' 29 points paced the Cavs. Jonathon Neal had 11 points and seven assists, and Ryan Salvi also contributed 11 points.

Center Shahon Burrell led James River (0-2) with 15 points and nine rebounds. Curtis Nolan added 11 points for the Knights.

FOREST - Hunter Hogatt scored 26 points, including five 3-pointers, as the Golden Eagles punished the Cavaliers in the Seminole District.

Staunton River (2-1, 2-1) took a 25-16 halftime lead and Jefferson Forest (1-2, 1-2) never could get any closer.

Cornelius Fox pumped in 13 points and Jeff English added another 11 for the Golden Eagles.

Jimmy Gillespie led the Cavaliers with 17 points, including three from 3-point range.

LYNCHBURG - Mark Arbogast scored 13 of his 22 points in the second half and teammate Joel Nester shut down the Gaels' top scorer after intermission as the Eagles (4-0, 2-0) rallied for a Virginia Independent Conference victory.

Abe Hughes had 11 points in the first half, but Nester shut him out in the second half until the final minute, when Hughes hit a 3-pointer and a layup. Nester scored 15 points and also had a team-high nine rebounds.

Dan Schemmel added 13 points for Holy Cross (0-3, 0-2).

CHARLOTTESVILLE - Rod Tasco, hampered by foul trouble in the first half, scored 15 of his game-high 20 points in the second half as the Celtics opened the season with a victory in Charlottesville.

Tasco scored seven points in a decisive third quarter, when Roanoke Catholic (1-0) outscored St.Anne's (1-3) 18-11. Tasco finished with 14 rebounds, nine on the offensive end.

Point guard Tony Joyce finished with 19 points and seven assists. Brendan McCarthy scored 15.

Brian Whitaker led North Cross (1-3, 1-1) with 15 points and Hal Johnson added 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Jon Phillips led all scorers with 18 points and Jason Spears tossed in 11 points, including three 3-pointers for Timberlake (1-1, 1-1).

LYNCHBURG - Betty Smith scored a game-high 15 points as the Eagles slipped past the Hilltoppers in a non-district game.

Franklin County (3-0) survived two field-goal attempts by E.C. Glass just before the final buzzer. The Eagles also got 14 points from Natalie Giles.

The Hilltoppers (0-2) got 12 points from Lee Ann Houston.

Genia Guthrie and Jenny Coons led RVC. Guthrie had 13 steals to go with 11 points and Coons added 13 points to lead all scorers.

Holy Cross (1-1, 1-1) was held to three points in the fourth quarter.

MARTINSVILLE - The Celtics rolled to an 18-4 advantage in the first quarter and coasted to a Blue Ridge Conference victory over the Chiefs.

Abby Dickson led the way for Roanoke Catholic (3-1, 2-0) with 16 points, but it was a team effort as every player on the Celtics' roster scored. Christy Hinman had a game-high 11 rebounds and Dickson added 10 as the Celtics dominated the boards 35-22.

Brooke Holyfield led Carlisle (0-4, 0-2) with 11 points.

Patrick Henry (0-2) employed a full-court press in the second quarter to cut its deficit to 10 points, but GW-Danville pulled away by outscoring the Patriots 14-8 in the third quarter.

Atrice Webb led Patrick Henry with 10 points.
