Book Nook to close

WYTHEVILLE - The Book Nook, a store at 310 W. Main St. that has specialized in used books for years, will close sometime early in January.

Between Christmas and Jan. 7, prices will be reduced even more than its regular used-book prices to reduce inventory before a pet store occupies the premises.

Liz Guynn of Galax bought the store three years ago from Henry Goodman of Wytheville.

Guynn has operated another Book Nook, at 964 E. Stuart Drive in Galax, since early 1989. It features new books but also has a section of used books, which will be changed more often now that she will have a bigger stock to rotate.

Goodman will continue to sell used books at a weekend flea market building in Abingdon.

Used books have become popular in the area. Wytheville's surviving book store, Blue Ridge Books, has a section for them in the back. Two used-book stores have opened on Main Street in Pulaski during the past year.

Holiday concert

WYTHEVILLE - The Wytheville Community College Concert Band, under the direction of Jack O. White, will present a holiday concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the George Wythe High School auditorium. Admission is free.

The 87-member band will perform seasonal numbers such as ``Sleigh Ride,'' ``The Christmas Song'' (better known as ``Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire''), ``American Christmas Rhapsody'' and other medleys, including a community carol sing. Other music will include Sousa's ``Hands Across the Sea'' march, ``Overture Jubiloso,'' ``Storm King March'' and a salute to the branches of the armed forces.

Now in its sixth year, the band is supported by the college's Educational Foundation and Cultural Affairs Committee as well as donations from the public.

White, its director, retired as director of bands and professor of music at Elon College and returned to Wytheville, where he had once been band instructor at George Wythe. He is now an adjunct professor of music at Wytheville Community College.

Several spring concerts are planned for 1995. Adults from the community interested in becoming prospective band members should attend the first spring rehearsal at 7 p.m. Jan. 24 in the George Wythe High School band room. Rehearsals are held each Tuesday.

Computer courses

WYTHEVILLE - Wytheville Community College will offer two weekly microcomputer applications courses at its main campus starting in January.

Introduction to Network I will be taught from Jan. 11 to Feb. 8. It will be followed by Introduction to Network II, Feb. 15 through March 15. Both one-credit courses will be taught from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays. Tuition for each class is $45.80.

These courses introduce fundamental data communication terminology, the components and options for establishing communication networks, and hands-on training in installing and operating Novell Netware.

The other course is Introduction to Computer Hardware, Upgrade and Maintenance, a two-credit course running Jan. 9 through March 13. It will be taught from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays, and tuition is $91.60.

The course goes beyond using repair manuals to fix symptoms of problems. It covers the latest theory and practice in upgrading and maintaining the IBM-based family of personal computers.
