HUDICK WINS HANDBALL TITLE IN ROANOKE

Andy Hudick defeated Tom Stocks 21-8 to win the Brenner-Worrell Handball Classic at the Downtown Roanoke YMCA.

There were 29 participants in the tournament, which honors Udell Brenner and De Worrell.

Worrell, a Lexington handball player who had won the Brenner Classic in the past, was killed in a USAir plane crash in Pittsburgh on Sept.8.

Trish Nervo, a junior from Glenvar, finished 29th in the 16th annual Foot Locker Cross Country Championships held at Balboa Park in San Diego.

Nervo, the defending Group A 3,200-meter state champion, ran the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 28.5 seconds.

She finished nearly three minutes behind the winner, Julia Stamps from Santa Rosa, Calif., who ran the course in 16:41.9.

The Foot Locker championship is the first and only national championship in high school athletics. ESPN will televise the finals on ``Scholastic Sports America'' at 5:30 p.m. on Dec.19.

Patrick Henry's Jamie Price won the 60-meter dash and the 300-meter dash and was named the most outstanding runner during the 25th annual Lynchburg Area Track and Field Championships Indoor Meet.

Price ran the 60 in 6.1 seconds and the 300 in 32.7.

Other Patriots who posted top finishes were Roshaun Martin (third in the 60 meters), James Hickenbothum (fifth in the 60) and Larry Jones (third in the long jump and 60-meter hurdles).

Patrick Henry's Shana Waller was third in the girls' shot put.

William Fleming's Michelle Watson won the 60-yard dash in a time of 7.3 seconds.
