REID TAPPED AS RICHMOND FOOTBALL COACH

Jim Reid, the defensive coordinator at Boston College, has been named head football coach at the University of Richmond.

Reid, 44, succeeds Jim Marshall, who was fired at the end of the season.

Reid returns to the Spiders after a one-year stint with the Eagles. He served as Richmond's defensive coordinator and assistant head coach in 1992 and 1993.

Reid played collegiately at Maine and was the head coach at Massachusetts from 1986-1991, compiling a 36-28-2 record.

In other sports news in the region:

Virginia Tech receiver Cornelius White suffered a fractured patella while working out his own Saturday night and will miss the Hokies' Dec. 30 Gator Bowl game against Tennessee.

White, the chief backup to Bryan Still at flanker, sustained the injury to his right kneecap while jogging. He underwent surgery at Montgomery Regional Hospital on Sunday and is expected to be sidelined for at least three months. Head trainer Eddie Ferrell said the Tech staff is hoping White will be able to participate in spring practice, which begins in late March.

White, a redshirt sophomore, caught 11 passes for 142 yards in 10 games played this season.

Redshirt freshman Shawn Scales of Woodbridge is expected to take White's spot behind Still in the Gator Bowl.

Three Washington and Lee football players have been named to Don Hansen's Football Gazette Division III All-South region team.

Former Lexington High standout Robert Hull, a junior defensive tackle, was named to the first team.

Named to the third team were senior cornerback Jon Wagner and senior wide receiver William Propst.

The University of Virginia had three men's soccer players and one women's soccer team member chosen to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Umbro All-America teams.

From the national championship men's team, third-year defender Brandon Pollard was chosen to the first team, second-year midfielder Mike Fisher was a second-team selection and fourth-year forward A.J. Wood made the third team. For the women, fourth-year defender Danielle Defosses was chosen second-team All-American.

Trish Nervo finished 29th in a 32-runner field during Saturday's Foot Locker Cross Country Championships in San Diego, Calif.

Nervo, a junior at Glenvar and three-time Group A state cross country champion, completed the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 28 seconds.

Nervo qualified for the Foot Locker race by finishing sixth in the South Region championships in Charlotte, N.C., on Nov.26.
