NEW LEAVES UVA FOR GA. TECH

Defensive-line coach Larry New is expected to leave Virginia's football staff after two seasons, sources said Monday.

New reportedly has accepted a multi-year offer from Georgia Tech, where he coached under Bill Curry during the 1980s.

In other coaching news Monday, Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Phil Elmassian announced he has withdrawn his name from consideration for a similar position at Georgia Tech. Elmassian recently interviewed for the vacant Yellow Jackets' post under new coach George O'Leary.

``When you are a part of a program that has been successful, you're going to have an opportunity to look at other jobs,'' Elmassian said in a statement released by the school. ``Virginia Tech, however, best serves my interest at this time. We have a lot to accomplish at Tech and I'm eager to get on with it.''

The Hokies lost offensive coordinator Gary Tranquill last week to Michigan State.

New, the defensive coordinator at Kentucky before coming to UVa in 1993, is the second assistant coach to leave UVa since the end of the season. Jim Bollman, who coached the centers and offensive guards, resigned last week to join the staff of new Michigan State head coach Nick Saban.

A third Cavaliers' assistant, offensive coordinator Tom O'Brien, is a leading candidate to succeed George Chaump as the head coach at Navy.

There was no word on any new assistants from head coach George Welsh, who has been on the recruiting trail for most of the last two weeks.

The Cavaliers, who have entertained more than 30 prospects on campus visits the past two weeks, received a commitment late Sunday from 6-foot-6, 225-pound William Jackson, a defensive end from Huguenot High in Richmond.

Jackson is rated the No.12 prospect in Virginia by SuperPrep magazine.
