MAN SENTENCED TO 40 YEARS IN SEX ASSAULTS

A Roanoke County judge has sentenced Ernest William Young, who pleaded guilty to a series of 12 charges of breaking and entering, grand larceny and sodomy, to 40 years in prison.

The Roanoke resident had been scheduled to be tried this week for two March 1993 incidents, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Randy Leach said.

During an earlier court hearing, Young, 39, pleaded not guilty to the charges of forcible sodomy and breaking and entering with intent to commit sodomy. The charges stemmed from two separate offenses. Young did not know the women involved in either of them, Leach said.

After a grand jury indicted him Friday on charges stemming from other incidents, though, Young decided to plead guilty to all of the offenses and appear for sentencing.

In addition, Young will serve 20 years for earlier charges in Roanoke.
