W&J LOOKING INTO TAUNTS

Washington and Jefferson is investigating reports that some of its football players taunted a black Albion running back with racial slurs during Saturday's Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl at Salem Stadium.

Following a 38-15 victory over the Presidents in the NCAA Division III championship game, Albion tailback Jeff Robinson told reporters that after his first run from scrimmage - a 2-yard gain - a W&J player said, ``You didn't get much on that one, nigger.''

That comment, Robinson said, motivated him to rush for 166 yards and three touchdowns.

``I have no respect for them,'' Robinson said during the postgame news conference. ``They were calling us names, and I'm not used to that. They were making fun of me, and there were racial slurs.''

John Luckhardt, W&J's coach, said Monday he was not aware of the accusations until he returned home. He said appropriate action would be taken if the allegations proved accurate.

Luckhardt apologized to Albion coach Pete Schmidt on Sunday, according to Robin Hartman, Albion's sports information director.
