TRUCK HITS, INJURES HORSEMEN

Two people who were struck by a pickup truck Sunday night while riding horses on Virginia 24 in Bedford County remained hospitalized Tuesday.

Dwayne Spangler, 17, of Vinton, was listed in very serious condition in Roanoke Memorial Hospital's neurointensive care unit. The condition of Walter Campbell Jr., 38, also of Vinton, was upgraded from serious to satisfactory.

Spangler and Campbell were riding horses with a group around 6:40 p.m. Sunday near Stewartsville when they were struck by a pickup truck driven by Jonathan Alls, 22, of Moneta, state Trooper Mark Scarce said. Their horses were killed by the impact.

Alls, whose driver's license had been suspended, has been charged with driving after being declared a habitual offender, a misdemeanor.

Scarce said Alls was driving about 45 mph when he struck the two men on horseback. The horses may have been crossing the road. None of the riders were wearing reflective garments or carrying lights, Scarce said.
