Christmas is a bittersweet time for many donors to the Good Neighbors Fund as they remember loved ones who are now deceased.

Shirley Vaughan of Roanoke sent a check to the fund Wednesday as a memorial to her father, James R. Vaughan, who died on Christmas Eve a year ago. She made the donation, she said in her letter, "for the purpose of providing for those less fortunate than myself."
