RECORD-SETTERS TOP DIVISION I-AA FOOTBALL TEAM

STEVE MCNAIR of Alcorn State picks up another postseason honor.

Alcorn State quarterback Steve McNair, who set records for total offense in a game, season and career, and record-setting runner Arnold Mickens of Butler made The Associated Press Division I-AA All-America team announced Wednesday.

McNair, who finished third in the Heisman Trophy balloting, passed and ran for 5,799 yards and 53 touchdowns this season and finished his career with 15,887 combined yards.

Both yardage figures are NCAA records for any division. McNair also holds the I-AA mark for total offense in a game, 649 yards against Southern on Oct.22.

Mickens, a transfer from Indiana, set the I-AA rushing mark with 2,255 yards and was the division's second-leading scorer, with 18 touchdowns. He gained more than 200 yards in eight consecutive games, including a school-record 295 against Valparaiso.

The other first-team running back is Idaho's Sherriden May, whose 61 career touchdowns are the most in I-AA history. May led the Big Sky Conference in rushing for the third consecutive year with 1,370 yards and didn't lose a fumble in 231 carries.

The wide receivers are Mark Orlando of Towson State and Derrick Ingram of Alabama-Birmingham, who led the division with 83 catches and 1,457 receiving yards. Orlando led I-AA in receiving yards per game (136) and was the division's top punt-returner with a 19.8-yard average.

Tight end Hanz Hoag of Evansville is the only repeater from last year's team. Hoag caught 50 passes for 556 yards and finished his career with 235 receptions, 10 short of the I-AA record for tight ends.

All-purpose player Anthony Jordan of Samford averaged 205 yards per game in rushing, receiving and returns. Jordan ran for 924 yards and had 400 yards in receptions, 169 in punt returns and 767 in kickoff returns. He also accounted for touchdowns four ways - running, receiving, returning a punt and passing.

The offensive line includes Altavista's William Pannell of Marshall, Chris Sammarone of Youngstown State, Ronald Cherry of McNeese State, Andre Maksimow of Boston University and Scott Gragg of Montana.

The defensive line is Anthony Cook of South Carolina State, Joe O'Brien of Boise State and Doug Berg of Southeast Missouri State. The linebackers are Dexter Coakley of Appalachian State, Pat Goodwillie of Pennsylvania, Andre Allen of Northern Iowa and Leon Jones of Youngstown State.

Leading the secondary is Joe Vaughn of Cal State-Northridge, who shared the division lead with nine interceptions. Vaughn tied a I-AA mark by returning four interceptions for touchdowns and set a division record for interception return yardage (265).

Completing the secondary are Matt Stevens of Appalachian State, Lester Weaver of Youngstown State and Darryl Pounds of Nicholls State.

The kicker is Jim Richter of Furman, who made 16 of 19 field-goal attempts. Punter Ross Schulte of Western Illinois averaged 42.3 yards, third-best in I-AA.
