WOMAN, 42, KILLED IN RAIN-RELATED CRASH

Heavy rain was a factor in one fatality in Bedford County and closed much of the Blue Ridge Parkway on Wednesday.

Ruth McMillen of Huddleston was killed when the car she was riding in was involved in a three-car collision.

State police said the early morning accident occurred on Virginia 709 near the Campbell County line when a car that veered into the left lane hit the car in which McMillen was riding. A third car driving behind McMillen's then hit the first car.

McMillen, 42, died at the scene. Information on other injuries was unavailable.

The National Weather Service reported a quarter inch of rainfall from midnight to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The rain turned to ice in many higher elevations, closing sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway. In Bedford County, the parkway was closed from milepost 91, near Virginia 695, south to milepost 106. Parkway roads from U.S. 220 in Roanoke County down to Adney Gap in Floyd County were also closed.

Roger Galloway of the weather service said the rain should end by this morning. But road closings and unsafe conditions may occur again with snow predicted for Sunday and Monday.
