The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors recently recognized Mason Cove Volunteer Fire Department for its 25 years of service to Roanoke County.
Mason Cove officially formed on Oct. 1, 1969, and six of its charter members remain with the organization today. Those six members are Norman Darnall, Glen Bandy, Melvin Conner, Ralph Giles, Fred Rector and Harry Wooten.
In addition to recognizing Mason Cove and its 25-year veterans, the board also noted Tom Lamons, a volunteer for Cave Spring Rescue Squad, for his 27 years of contribution to the community.
Hospice seeking program volunteers
Good Samaritan Hospice, an in-home program for patients with life-limiting illnesses in the Roanoke Valley, is seeking volunteers to provide practical and emotional support for patients and their families.
This support includes running errands, staying with a patient a few hours to relieve the care giver, visiting patients and providing transportation to medical appointments.
A 23-hour training program will begin Jan. 23.
