He was a Chemist with the Mobile Chemical Company for 25 years and also served with the Xerox Corporation for 18 years. Surviving are his wife, Beatrice Goffe Backus; three sons, Denton C. Born April 6, 1917, in Rocky Mount, he was a son of the late Charles Jones Davis Sr. and Betsey Lemon Davis. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Rufus Lemon Davis. He was the retired owner of Daniel Creek Water Co., Inc.; served in the U.S. Army in China during World War II; attended Hampden-Sydney College, Roanoke College, National Business College; was a member of Bassett Memorial United Church; was a member of masonic Piedmont Lodge #152, Martinsville, Kazim Temple-Rocky Mount Lodge 201 A. F. & A.M., Martinsville, Martinsville Chapter Royal Arts #40, and George W. Wright Cammandry #31 for over 50 years; and was a former member of Henry County Planning Commission. Surviving are his wife, Agnes Mason Davis; a son, Edwin Mason Davis; daughter-in-law, Susan G. Davis; granddaughter, Bonnie Lee Davis all of Marietta, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Catherine D. Mrs. Davis was born in Montgomery County on April 24, 1910, a daughter of the late Radford and Lola Lee Dove Dowdy. She was a member of the Mt. View Wesleyan Church on Meadowbrook Drive. She was born May 14, 1916, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Ulyssess Grant Hall and Estelle Forrest Hall. Her husband was the late Ernest Harrison. She was retired with 30 years service as hospital administrator at Bird S. Coler Hospital, New York City. Mr. Reed was born July 29, 1899 in Floyd, Va. and was the son of the late Susan Akers Reed and Andrew Reed. He was associated with Standard Oil Company for a number of years. STOCKTON, Archibald Dicks, Jr. 88, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, December 14, 1994, in a local hospital. He was an active charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and was very instrumental in the formation of the Virginia Inland Sailing Association at Smith Mountain Lake. He was employed by N & W Railway early in life and was a construction engineer for Appalachian Power Company for over 40 years. Mr. Stockton was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Lakeland Masonic Lodge #190 AF & AM and the Roanoke Scottish Rite Bodies. Surviving are his wife, Anna Lee Wendorf Stockton, Roanoke; his stepson, Frederick L. Wendorf, Salem; brother, Worth B. Stockton, Moneta; many nieces and nephews and a multitude of good friends. He was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel at noon Saturday, with the Rev. James F. Riach officiating. Mrs. Woody is survived by one son, Matthew East of Dublin; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Wanda and Donnie Austin of Greensboro, N.C., Chris Golden of Georgia, Vennie and Kelvin McCabe of Chester, Conn., Diane East of Chester Conn.; four brothers, Clinton Austin of Greensboro, N.C., James Harold Austin Jr. (Shorty) of Rocky Mount, Larry Austin of Ridgeway, Rodger Austin of Rocky Mount; three sisters, Shirley Franklin, Frances Sledd, Glenda Peters, all of Rocky Mount; also five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 18, 1994, at 2 p.m. at Webb Funeral Home Chapel in Spruce Pine, N.C.
WRAY, Melvin L. (``John''), 62, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, December 14, 1994, at the VA Medical Center in Salem. He was a retired employee of the Merita Bakery with over 33 years of service. Mr. Wray was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was preceded in death by his wife, Alene Dalton Wray. Surviving are his mother, Aradna G. Wray, Boones Mill; daughter, Susan Oyler, Roanoke; stepdaughter, Darlene Ammons, Texas; granddaughter, Laurie Lintini, South Carolina; sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Gene Poff, Salem; brothers and sisters-in-law, James R. and Edna Wray, Roanoke, Kenneth and Marie Wray, Boones Mill; one great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel at 2 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Chris Foster officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. The family will receive friends after 3 p.m. Friday at Oakey's South Chapel.
