Nave, whose husband was laid off for a short period, said she and the parents of some of her pupils have had to deal with layoffs and economic setbacks, and she thinks they understand what it's like to be without.
"The gift of giving to those less fortunate than ourselves has given my students a new perspective on Christmas this holiday season," she wrote.
"They have enjoyed watching the money jar become full each day as they contributed their ice cream money and money they earned at home. Then, they would decide what the money would be used for that day (a healthy meal, a warm coat, a house, medicine, etc.)."
Nave said she thinks her pupils view Christmas differently now: "It's giving, not getting, Christmas presents. Hopefully, this realization will continue in their lives."
