VIRGINIA TO NAME INTERIM AD

John T. Casteen, president of the University of Virginia, said Thursday he likely will name an interim athletic director today or early next week and begin an immediate a search for a permanent AD.

Casteen met with members of the Virginia athletic department to outline the process and timetable for replacing Jim Copeland, who resigned last week to take a similar position at SMU. Casteen said he hoped to have a new AD by late in the spring.

A search committee of six to eight members - including faculty, student-athletes, athletics staff and alumni - will be formed to begin work in early January, and a consulting firm may be hired to assist in the search, Casteen said.

In other sports in the region:

Ferrum senior John Breedlove has been named the NCAA Division III South Region basketball player of the week by Columbus Multimedia. In three games last week, Breedlove had 71 points, 12 rebounds, 13 assists, nine steals and three blocks. The 6-foot-3 forward from Tunstall High School led the Panthers with 31 points Saturday in their overtime victory over Newport News Apprentice.

Virginia Tech's Jennifer Schmidt has been named to the Division I All-State women's volleyball team selected by the Virginia Sports Information Directors' Association. A second-team All-Metro Conference selection, Schmidt had 255 kills and 110 blocks this season for the Hokies and became the school's all-time leader in blocks.
