The Express center has been called up by the Kansas City Blades of the International Hockey League. Ferschweiler, who was called up by Roanoke's other IHL affiliate, the Minnesota Moose, for one game Dec.9, will make his Blades debut against the Moose tonight in Kansas City, Mo.
Roanoke is the only East Coast Hockey League team with two IHL affiliates.
Ferschweiler was leading the Express in scoring with 30 points on eight goals and 22 assists in 22 games. His points total ranked 21st in the ECHL.
Frank Anzalone, the Express' coach, said one shouldn't confuse Ferschweiler's opportunity and the Express' needs. He acknowledged the Express could use Ferschweiler when it faces league-leading Richmond at 7:30 tonight at the Roanoke Civic Center.
``It's a great break for Pat,'' Anzalone said of the 24-year-old center. ``Any time a guy has a chance to move up, you have to be happy for him. We'll just have to go out there and do our best.''
We'll just have to go out there and do our best," Anzalone said.
In other Express news, goaltender Dan Ryder has been returned to Roanoke by the Blades. In three games with Kansas City, Ryder posted a 1-2 record with a goals-against average of 4.72. With the Express, Ryder is 3-2 with a 3.65 goals-against average.
Ryder replaces Rocco Trentadue on Roanoke's 18-man roster. Trentadue was placed on waivers.
The Renegades come into tonight's matchup struggling. Richmond was 14-1-4 in October and November, but is 2-4-1 in December. The slump coincides with the promotion of goalie Grant Sjerven to the Chicago Wolves of the IHL.
But one of the Renegades' two December victories came in a 6-5 shootout over Roanoke on Dec.3. That game was marked by an overtime controversy, when the Express thought it had scored with 12 seconds remaining in the extra period but the officials ruled the puck did not cross the line and disallowed the goal.
Express vs. Richmond
