"There are a lot of hungry people" in the valley, said Carl Schmidt, a member of the service ministry committee that oversees the project. He said 800 pounds of spuds went to the Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program for distribution, while another 1,500 pounds were divided among about 150 families not served by the program.
Schmidt said the church would like to expand the project, which has yielded over 7,000 pounds of potatoes since its inception. "We still have more land, but not enough people to work it right now," he explained. Between two dozen and three dozen people - including some of the recipients - are directly involved in the garden project at any given time, and Schmidt said anyone who has a need is eligible to share in the bounty.
This year's harvest was down a bit over last year's, Schmidt reported. "We had quite a time with beetles."

The facility is part of the church's efforts to reach out to young, single adult church members as well as to non-members. Participants can enroll in the church's Institute of Religion program and become involved in the Latter-day Saint Student Association, a church collegiate service organization.
