March 27, 1994 - Simone Ann Ayton gives birth to a boy, Darius.
April 18 - Ayton takes her son to Community Hospital with a temperature of 100 and diarrhea. Doctors determine that Darius suffers from dehydration, apparently the result of not having been fed adequately.
April 25 - On the day Darius is to be released from the hospital, a judge issues an emergency removal order after a social worker says the child could be in "imminent danger" if returned to his mother.
April 28 - A juvenile court judge awards temporary legal custody of Darius to the Department of Social Services. Now 1 month old, Darius is placed in foster care. Ayton is ordered to continue her counseling and to enroll in a parenting class.
May 29 - Social services workers report that Ayton is making progress in counseling sessions. A judge extends her visitation rights, but does not grant full custody.
Sept. 12 - After being informed that Ayton has made "great progress in caring for her son," a judge gives her full legal custody of Darius.
Nov. 1 - In what Ayton first tells police was an accident, Darius drowns in his bath water at her Ferncliff Avenue apartment.
Dec. 5 - A grand jury in Roanoke Circuit Court indicts Ayton on a charge of murder. No trial date has been set.
