MURDER CHARGE IS BROUGHT

A man described by police as a drifter was arrested and charged with murder Saturday afternoon after he called 911, police said.

Franklin County sheriff's deputies arrived at the home of Harold Douglas Coon on Route 4, Callaway just after noon to find Coon, 56, dead in the trunk of a car, said Capt. Bill Overton.

Coon had been stabbed, Overton said.

Overton said Lawrence Victor "Larry" Armijo, 28, who made the call, was arrested at the scene.

He said deputies weren't sure where Armijo lives.

Armijo's brother, John Armijo of Hardy, said his brother had been living with his wife and child in Gladehill, but was recently divorced.

He said he thought Larry Armijo had been working and staying somewhere in Callaway.

John Armijo said he wasn't very close to his brother. He said their father died when they were young, and their mother is in poor health.

"He had a lot of problems, and he was kind of the troublemaker, so I kind of steered clear of him," John Armijo said.

Overton would not comment on a motive in the slaying, why 911 was called, or how many times Coon was stabbed. He said deputies were still investigating the scene, and more information would be available after an autopsy.

Larry Armijo was being held Saturday night without bond. An arraignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday.
