ROWE, JAMES MADISON PUT HOWARD AWAY EARLY

HARRISONBURG - Louis Rowe scored a career-high 28 points Saturday, and James Madison put together a 22-5 run midway through the first half to take control en route to an 86-69 victory over Howard.

After a dunk by Howard's Anthony Brown tied the score at 10 with 14:32 left in the half, the Dukes (3-2) started their run with a Kent Culuko 3-pointer. Ryan Culicerto scored the final six points of the run on consecutive layups as the Dukes took a 32-15 lead with 6:56 left.

Howard (1-7) opened the second half with an 8-1 run to cut the margin to 46-36 with 14:20 to play, but the Dukes responded by scoring the next four points and slowly pulled away.

Phil Chenier and Brown each scored 11 points for Howard.

Liberty 90

King 58

LYNCHBURG - Peter Aluma scored 15 points, eight in a first-half run to take King out of the game, as Liberty defeated the Tornadoes.

The Flames (4-1) opened the game with a 20-8 run and never let the lead drop below double digits, leading by as many as 23 in the first half. Trailing 42-24 at the half, King (2-7) was unable to challenge Liberty's 3-point shooters or gain control of the boards.

Larry Jackson led the Flames with 16 points, while Barry Taylor had 15.

Chris Kirkpatrick led King, a NAIA Division II school, with 24 points.

Virginia Union 102

Lincoln 69

RICHMOND - Thomas Meredith scored 21 points, and Maurice Green added 18 as Virginia Union beat Lincoln.

The Panthers (7-0) had a 51-33 halftime lead and never let Lincoln (5-2) back into the game. Virginia Union had a 58-48 rebounding advantage and was 34-of-39 from the free-throw line.

Lincoln is an NCAA Division III school, while Virginia Union is Division II.

Tennessee Tech 104

Clinch Valley 73

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore Lorenzo Coleman scored a career-high 26 points, pulled down 19 rebounds and broke Tennessee Tech's career blocked-shot record as the Golden Eagles defeated Clinch Valley.

Coleman blocked six shots to bring his career total to 120, breaking the record of 115 set in 1990 by Milos Babic. Coleman entered the game ranked second nationally in blocks per game.

Tennessee Tech (3-3) led 45-43 at the half. Clinch Valley (3-9) took a 1-point lead, 52-51, with 16:54 left, but Mark Glanton followed with a basket to put Tech on top for good

Cheyney 87

Virginia State 84

ETTRICK - Anthony Carr scored five points in overtime, including two free throws with 17 seconds remaining, as Cheyney beat Virginia State.

Carr's 3-pointer with 2:59 remaining gave Cheyney (5-3) an 83-80 lead it never relinquished.

Virginia State (2-5) overcame a 20-point second-half deficit to tie the score at 78 with eight seconds remaining on two free throws by Reggie Frisby. Cheyney was unable to get off a shot, and the game went into overtime.

Frisby led all scorers with 26 points, while Kelvin Kinney grabbed a team-high 18 rebounds.

Friday's game

Old Dominion 92, Weber St. 85: At Honolulu, Mike Jones scored six points and Petey Sessoms added five during overtime to give Old Dominion a victory over Weber State in the opening round of the Nike Festival.

With the scored tied at 83-83, Sessoms hit a 3-pointer and Jones followed with three straight field goals to put the Monarchs (5-3) ahead for good.

Sessoms finished with 24 points.
