CELTICS' DOMINATION CONTINUES

State champion Roanoke Catholic dominated the Virginia Independent Schools Division I All-State football team, with three first-team choices on offense and four on defense.

The Celtics' Tony Joyce was named a first-team selection at three positions - quarterback, punt-returner and defensive back - on the squad picked by a panel of coaches.

Other first-team choices from Roanoke Catholic were P.J. Moyer at running back, Philip Buchy on the offensive line, Bill Massello on the defensive line and Kendall Selfe at linebacker.

North Cross' John Goodwin also was a first-team selection, earning a spot on the defensive line.

Catholic's second-team choices were lineman Marshall Glass and kicker Amaury Medeiros on offense and back Cameron Blount on defense. Goodwin also was honored as an offensive lineman, joining teammates Robert Rude (wide receiver) and Bill Pattisall (linebacker) on the second team.

Joyce probably was best known as a defensive back, intercepting eight passes, causing a fumble and recovering a fumble. At quarterback, he passed and ran for 811 yards. As a return specialist, he averaged 27 yards on 21 runbacks of kickoffs and punts.

Selfe was Timesland's leading tackler, with 156 stops. He was a utility player, playing a backup role at running back and quarterback for the Celtics.

Moyer rushed for 1,792 yards as a sophomore and has 3,220 in his career. Buchy was solid on the offensive line. Blount and Massello were integral parts of a defense that gave up more than one touchdown only once in 12 games.
