CAVE SPRING TOPS SALEM IN OVERTIME

Matt Matheny converted a key three-point play in overtime and Doug Cullinan hit the go-ahead basket as Cave Spring nipped Salem 62-60 in a non-district boys' game Saturday night on the Knights' court.

Cave Spring frittered away an 11-point halftime lead, survived a missed shot by the Spartans at the end of regulation and overcame a three-point overtime deficit.

Salem (1-1) went ahead 58-55 in overtime on a Matt Woolwine basket and a Kevin Garst free throw. After Ryan Reeves missed the front end of a one-and-one for the Spartans, Matheny scored inside and was fouled. He made the free throw, then Cullinan scored with 50 seconds ago to put Cave Spring (2-3) ahead 60-58.

Jeff Lang hit two free throws to ice it with nine seconds to go.

Salem rallied in the second half behind Garst, Woolwine and Bryan Monroe. The trio combined for 25 of the Spartans' 33 points in the third and fourth quarters.

Cave Spring outscored Salem 25-8 in the second quarter behind three 3-pointers from Lang and two from Cullinan.

Lang finished with 15 points, Matheny had 11 and Cullinan 10. Garst scored 22 for Salem and Monroe had 15.
