ROCKBRIDGE CAN'T BEAT THE BLUES

Mike McElroy scored a game-high 27 points to lead Parry McCluer, the 1994 Group A runner-up, past Rockbridge County 86-73 on Saturday night in a non-district boys' game.

McElroy scored 11 of his points in the third quarter as the Fighting Blues (6-0) opened a seven-point lead. Parry McCluer then made 13 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Brandon Garrett added 24 points for Parry McCluer and Nathan Floyd chipped in 18.

Jason Remillard scored 26 points and Rob Hoyle added 12 for Rockbridge County (0-3), which hit 10 3-pointers

Bath County 63

Buffalo Gap 46

HOT SPRINGS - Patrick Lennon scored a game-high 14 points as the Chargers used a spread offense to create easy shots and blast Buffalo Gap in a non-district game.

Lennon scored eight of his points in the first half as Bath County (4-2) scored the first six points of the game and led by 10 at halftime.

The Chargers' spread offense helped them shoot 52 percent from the floor and 11 players scored. David Buzzard and Todd Townsend scored 11 points each.

Buffalo Gap (0-3) was led by Josh Simmers, who scored 12 points.

Grayson County 58

Rural Retreat 42

RURAL RETREAT - The Blue Devils held the Indians to one field goal in a 20-8 third quarter and went on to their second non-district victory over Rural Retreat this season.

Chuck Sawyers led the way for Grayson County (2-0) with 12 points and Chad Shaffner added 11.

The Indians (0-4) did not have a double-figure scorer, but showed considerable improvement since the teams' first meeting - a 34-point Blue Devils victory.

Friday's game

Fort Chiswell 78, Pocahontas 72: In Pocahontas, the Pioneers rallied behind Jody Burnette in the second half to defeat the Indians in a non-district game.

Burnette led all scorers with 36 points for Fort Chiswell (2-2), and T.J. King added 11.

Johnny Little led Pocahontas (0-3) with 16 points and 24 rebounds. The Indians also got 15 from Chad Scarberrry, 14 from Corey Nunley and 12 from David Davis. Pocahontas missed 16 of 21 free throws.
