Virginia Gov. George Allen unveiled an ambitious welfare reform plan on Thursday that would move recipients from dependency to self-sufficiency within two years.

But how, recipients ask, can they get off welfare if benefits are too quickly pulled out from under them?

Four welfare recipients shared their stories with the Roanoke Times & World-News - how they came to the system and why they continue to depend on government assistance. Their reasons are varied and often complex. They may sadden, anger or frustrate.

But the four recipients say they only want people to know what it means to live on welfare.
