Eight Patriots have been selected, including five on the first team. PH-Ashland's Andre Curtis made it as a linebacker and a center, and the Patriots' Ray Long Jr. was named the coach of the year.
Three players, including Timesland Defensive Player of the Year Eric Webb, were selected from Pulaski County. Patrick Henry of Roanoke had one honoree.
PH-Ashland's domination of the AP team came after the Patriots cruised to a 14-0 record and the first state championship by a Central Region team since 1979.
About the only place PH-Ashland failed to win on the AP team, selected by Virginia sportswriters, was in the balloting for player of the year. That honor went to Maurice Daniels, Division 6 champion Annandale's gifted two-way performer. Daniels was a first-team selection at guard and linebacker.
Of the eight All-Group AAA selections from PH-Ashland, five are on offense, including quarterback Daninelle Derricott, the Richmond Times-Dispatch's player of the year. Derricott completed 56 percent of his passes for 1,205 yards and 15 touchdowns, and he rushed 164 times for 1,421 yards and 17 scores.
Another first-team pick for the Patriots is Derricott's favorite target, Erron Kinney, a 6-foot-7, 245-pound tight end who had 32 receptions for 750 yards. Kinney is joined at end on the AP team by Woodbridge's Marcus Griffin, who had 1,094 yards on 68 catches.
PH-Ashland's Damien Woody is a first-team tackle, as is Dontrel Parker, the best offensive lineman on a 13-1 Deep Creek team that lost to the Patriots in the Division 5 championship game.
Daniels is joined at guard by Pulaski County's Chris Lawson. PH-Ashland's Jay Wingfield is a second-team pick.
John Poole of George Washington-Danville is the first-team center, and PH-Ashland's Curtis was named to the second team.
Leading the backs is Annandale's Jasmin Glenn, who rushed for 1,992 yards and 22 touchdowns to lead the Atoms to their second consecutive Division 6 title. Glenn capped his high school career with a six-touchdown performance in the state championship game, Annandale's 26th consecutive victory.
Also named first-team backs are Theomone Brooks of GW-Danville and Antoine Womack of Phoebus. Brooks rushed for 1,382 yards while averaging more than 10 yards per carry. He also caught 24 passes for 250 yards and scored 20 touchdowns. Womack rushed for 1,595 yards and 20 touchdowns on the way to being named the player of the year by the Newport News Daily Press.
On defense, the linemen are L.J. Jones of Phoebus, Mike Willetts of West Potomac and Chris Machovina of Lake Braddock. PH-Ashland's John Smith is a second-team choice.
PH-Ashland's Keith Short is a first-team defensive end, as is Donovan Yarbrough, the top player on Annandale's defense.
Daniels, a first-team All-Group AAA linebacker in 1993, was credited with 136 first hits, 223 assists, nine caused fumbles and 23 tackles for losses.
Daniels is joined at first-team linebacker by PH-Ashland's Curtis, a converted defensive end, and Pulaski County's Eric Webb, who moves up from the All-Group AAA second unit last year.
The defensive backs are Norcom's Rudy Howard, a second-team choice last year, and Booker T. Washington's Michael Beverly and West Potomac's Billy Beal.
The return specialist is Jamie Price of Patrick Henry-Roanoke. Price averaged 22 yards on 26 returns of kickoffs and punts.
Shayne Graham, a Pulaski County junior who was the first-team kicker last year, did nothing to hurt his standing in 1994. This time around, he hit 10-of-15 field-goal attempts, including a 9-for-9 performance from inside 44 yards. His longest field goal made was from 52 yards.
The punter is Albemarle's Craig Settimo, who averaged 41 yards per kick.
Patrick Henry-Roanoke's Chris Combs was a second-team choice at defensive end.
