NAMES ON CAMPUS

ALAN BAYER, professor of sociology and director of Virginia Tech's Center for Survey Research, received the 1994 Excellence in Education Award from the College of Education at Pennsylvania State University, where he completed his undergraduate work in 1961. He also was co-recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the College of Social Sciences at Florida State University, where he received a master's and doctorate degrees in sociology.

The Entomological Society of America awarded RICHARD D. FELL, associate professor of entomology, its 1994 Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching.

DONALD R. SUNSHINE and DENNIS J. KILPER, professors in the College of Architecture, each received an Award for Excellence in Architecture at the Annual Design Awards Program in Richmond sponsored by the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects. Sunshine won the award for his design turning a 140-year-old tar paper shack into a weekend family retreat. Kilper was honored for the design of his own residence in Blacksburg.

WAYNE PURCELL, professor of agriculture and director of the Research Institute on Livestock Pricing, was a panelist at the recent Summit on Risk Management in American Agriculture in Washington, D.C. For the first time, individuals from all areas of the business met to deliberate the impact of a holistic risk management system for American agriculture.

JAMES "BUD" ROBERTSON JR., Alumni Distinguished Professor, and LON SAVAGE, author and former assistant to the Virginia Tech president, were elected chairman and co-chairman of the new Friends of the Virginia Tech Libraries. The group's mission is to increase public awareness of the libraries' resources and services, expand access to the programs and enhance private philanthropy that sustain the libraries.
