CHRISTIANSBURG TURNS BACK SPARTANS COMEBACK 77-71

Ryan Hubble scored a team-high 23 points and hit some crucial free throws down the stretch to lead Christiansburg past Giles 77-71in a non-district basketball game Wednesday.

Christiansburg led 68-57 with less than three minutes to go before the Spartans made a comeback. Giles' Aaron Myers, who scored a game-high 25 points, was fouled while attempting a 3-pointer and made all three free throws to cut the lead to 71-69.

Hubble then hit two free throws on Christiansburg's next possession to give the Blue Demons a four-point lead and Giles (2-3) never got any closer than three the rest of the game.

Hubble hit six of eight free throws in the fourth quarter to preserve the win and the Blue Demons got 16 points from Darrell Calloway. Carlton Ashbrook added 10.

Josh Stephens and John King scored 12 each for Giles.

ROCKY MOUNT - Junior guard Brad McCall scored a career-high 20 points and Chad Foutz hit two free throws with seven seconds left as Franklin County handed Martinsville its first loss of the season in a non-district game.

McCall maded six of seven 3-pointers for the game and hit his first four to help the Eagles (4-1) open up a 19-point first half lead.

The Bulldogs (6-1) managed to tie the score at 45 in the third quarter, but the Eagles then went on a 18-5 run to take a 63-50 lead.

Martinsville came back to cut the lead to 68-67 with less than 30 seconds left behind Manti Venable, who scored 11 of his team-high 18 in the second half and Michael Martin, who added nine of his 17 in the second half.

The Eagles then took a 71-68 lead after Foutz, who finished with 18 points, hit the two free throws with seven seconds left.

Michael Martin missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.

Carlos Holland added 17 points for Franklin County. Carlos Martin had 15 for the Bulldogs.

HILLSVILLE - Tito Crockett scored 15 points as Galax barely squeaked past Carroll County in a non-district game.

Galax (3-1) led 54-46 late in the game before the Cavaliers made a comeback. Casey McCreary, who scored 10 points, hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to three, 54-51.

Matt Larrowe then stole the inbounds pass, hit a layup, and was fouled as Carroll County trailed by one. Larrowe missed the free throw to tie it and the Cavaliers then fouled with three seconds left.

Galax missed the free throw, and a Cavalier desperation shot did not fall as the Maroon Tide held on for the win. Ken Houtz and Justin Lineberry scored 10 each for Galax.

Kevin Dalton had a game-high 17 for the Cavaliers and Anthony Thomas added 12.

Hal Johnson scored 31 points and Brian Whitaker added 28 as the Raiders blasted Martinsville Christian in the first round of the North Cross Invitational at North Cross

Johnson scored 17 points in the second half to prevent any Martinsville Christian comeback and also grabbed 14 rebounds.

Whitaker helped North Cross (2-3) open up a 13-point halftime lead by scoring 17 of his 28 in the first half and finished the game hitting six of 11 3-point attempts.

Martinsville Christian (3-3) cut the lead to 10 in the second half behind James Philpott, who scored 13 of his 16 in the second half. Chris Meeks led Martinsville Christian with 21 points and Junior Gravely added 15.

William Watkins had 17 points for North Cross, which will play Carlisle in the semifinals tonight at 8:30 p.m.

Richard Booth scored a team-high 17 points, dished out six assists and had five steals to lead Roanoke Valley Christian past Lynchburg Christian Academy in the first round of the North Cross Invitational at North Cross.

Booth scored nine of his 17 in the second quarter to help Roanoke Valley Christian (6-1, 2-0) take an 11-point halftime lead.

LCA cut the lead to six with less than three minutes to go, thanks to Ben Martin, who scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the second half, but the Eagles hit seven of eight free throws in the fourth quarter to stave off the comeback.

Simon Foster added 15 points and Joe Surkamer chipped 13 for the Eagles, who will play Glenvar in the semifinals tonight at 7 p.m.
