POPLAR FOREST SEEKS VOLUNTEERS

Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest is seeking adult volunteers who are interested in history and preservation and who enjoy working with the public.

Volunteers work as tour docents, giving interpretive tours of Jefferson's retreat, museum shop assistants and administrative associates who assist with clerical work and other tasks.

Volunteers must complete a training program that begins Jan. 28. Interviews for volunteer positions will be held during the weeks of Jan. 17 and 23.

Volunteers must be willing to work a minimum of six hours per month from April through November.

Poplar Forest is in Bedford County, a few miles southwest of Lynchburg off U.S. 221. Restoration of the octagonal house designed and built by Jefferson began in 1993. Archaeological excavations are ongoing.

For more information, call (804) 525-1806.
