THE TIPOFF

CHIPMUNK CHEER: That ageless chipmunk Alvin - who, incidentally is 30-something - this afternoon and tonight will be joined by a cast of characters, including jolly old St. Nick himself, to sing and dance their way through 21 numbers depicting the "True Meaning of Christmas."

The winners of a True Meaning of Christmas Drawing and Coloring Contest, which ended Dec. 17, are scheduled to make guest appearances during the shows at 3 and 7 p.m at the Virginia Horse Center's Indoor Coliseum, Lexington.

Reserved seats cost $12.50 for adults, $10.50 for children age 12 or younger; general admission costs $10. Call 463-7060.

WRONG, WARHOL: The Sedalia Center promises at least 10 minutes in the spotlight (rather than the 15 minutes Andy Warhol assured each of us) on Saturday from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at an open-stage entertainment and potluck supper.

Children, adults and family groups are invited to sing, play musical instruments, tell stories, read poetry, dance, perform skits, do dramatic readings or share their other artistic abilities. Preregistration is requested so that a time schedule can be arranged.

The Sedalia Center is on Virginia 638, just off Virginia 122, between Bedford and Big Island. There is no admission charge. Call (804) 299-5080.

GARTH NEWEL NOEL: Cocktails, canapes and compositions by Corelli, Schubert, Handel and Dvorak will enhance the ambiance Saturday and Sunday during the Garth Newel Music Center's Christmas Music Holiday Weekend. Activities will include performances and dinner each day, as well as an optional Midnight Service, including the Garth Newel Chamber Players, in Hot Springs; a Christmas Day champagne/buffet brunch; tea in the Great Hall at the Homestead Hotel and a continental breakfast.

The all-inclusive, double occupancy cost is $250 per person for the weekend; cocktails, performance and dinner only costs $65 per person per night. Reservations are required. Call the center, located on U.S. 220 between Hot Springs and Warm Springs, at 839-5018.

HOOP, THERE IT IS: William Byrd, Cave Spring, Fieldale-Collinsville, Franklin County, Northside, Parry-McCluer, Rockbridge County and Salem high schools will be the players Monday through Wednesday at the Salem Civic Center during the Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament. The games begin at 2 p.m. each day. Tickets are $5 per day for adults and $4 per day for students. Tournament passes cost $12 and $10 respectively. Call 375-3004.

PRIDE AND PRINCIPLES: The Harrison Museum of African American Culture will host its annual Kwanzaa celebration on Thursday from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. The observance, between Dec. 26 and Dec. 31, is based upon Seven Principles of Blackness: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.

The Harrison's free celebration will include music, family activities and a complementary Kwanzaa guide to encourage continuation of the celebration at home. African or red, black and green attire is encouraged, but not mandatory. People of all races are invited to share this cultural experience. Call 345-4818.

BOFFO BLEND: Delbert McClinton's honest blend of rock, R&B and country has for years earned his fan's admiration. In 1992, McClinton's music earned him, together with Bonnie Raitt, a Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Duo for "Good Man, Good Woman."

On Thursday, McClinton will bring his kudos-winning sound to Valley Country in Salem. Tickets, on sale at Ticket Master and Valley Country, are $15 in advance, $16.50 at the door. Doors open at 8 p.m.; the show starts at 9 p.m.

IT'S NOW OR NEXT YEAR: Did you last year put off till too late enjoying seasonal holiday displays and activities? Well, unless you get cracking, you're about to do it again.

The 21 beautifully decorated trees that comprise the Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley's 12th annual Festival of Trees come down Saturday. The dazzling display at the Jefferson Center, 541 Luck Ave., Roanoke, is open daily 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tickets cost $1.50 for adults, $1 for children ages 6-12, children younger than 6, free. Proceeds benefit the association. Call 344-0931.

Fantasyland, the free mechanical holiday displays on the third floor of Heironimus in downtown Roanoke, also close down for the year Saturday at 5 p.m. Santa's hours are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., with a half hour off for lunch around noon. Call 342-2028.
