Kathleen Dooley, an assistant city attorney in Chesapeake for the past five years and a former Blacksburg resident, will report to her new job Feb. 1, according to a news release from the town.
Town Council is expected to make her appointment official in January.
Dooley, who worked as the senior staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society of the New River Valley from 1985-1989, will be the town's third full-time attorney, making $55,000 a year.
The position was left open in October, when Richard Kaufman, who had served as attorney for 11 years, resigned to become the town attorney for Herndon. Since then, James Hutton, a partner with the law firm of Gilmer, Sadler, Ingram, Sutherland and Hutton, has served on an interim basis.
For several weeks, Town Council has been holding executive sessions to discuss the hiring of a new attorney. A starting field of 26 candidates was narrowed down to four who received in-depth interviews.
"She floated to the top," Mayor Roger Hedgepeth said. "Ms. Dooley got a rather superlative endorsement from everyone we talked to."
Dooley holds a law degree from the State University of New York, has worked with the Virginia Supreme Court and in the federal courts, and serves as a member or officer of several attorneys' associations, according to the release.
