CORBIN TOPS GROUP AA'S FIRST TEAM

Jenni Corbin, who led Lee-Staunton to a 29-0 record and the state championship, has been named the Group AA girls' basketball player of the year by The Associated Press.

Corbin was joined on the AP's first unit by teammate Kelly Simmons, William Campbell's Hope Cook, Osbourn's Danielle Golay and Kim Hairston of Bassett.

The coach of the year is Steve Walk, who is stepping down after leading Lee-Staunton to an 89-11 mark in the last four seasons and this year's Group AA title.

Corbin, a 5-foot-10 senior, averaged 15 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.1 steals, and she shot 42 percent from 3-point range. She was a second-team All-Group AA selection as a junior,

Cook and Hairston both are repeating as first-team selections. Cook, a 5-11 senior, averaged 23 points, and Hairston, a 5-6 senior, scored 22.8 points and averaged 5.1 assists.

Golay, a 6-2 senior who was a second-teamer last year, averaged 17.1 points and also double figures in rebounds this season.

Beth Corbin, Jenni's twin, is joined on the second team by Samantha Ferguson of Martinsville, Lakeland's Hope Knight, Louisa freshman Telisha Quarles and Stacey Simms of Loudoun Valley.
