FRANKLIN COUNTY EDGES MARTINSVILLE

ROCKY MOUNT - Junior guard Brad McCall scored a career-high 20 points and Chad Foutz hit two free throws with seven seconds left as Franklin County handed Martinsville its first loss of the season with a 71-68 non-district win.

McCall sank six of seven 3-pointers for the game and hit his first four to help the Eagles (4-1) open up a 19-point first-half lead.

The Bulldogs (6-1) managed to tie the score at 45 in the third quarter, but the Eagles then went on a 18-5 run to take a 63-50 lead.

Martinsville came back to cut the lead to one, 68-67, with less than 30 seconds left behind Manti Venable, who scored 11 of his team-high 18 in the second half. and Michael Martin, who added nine of his 17 in the second half.

The Eagles then took a 71-68 lead after Foutz, who finished with 18 points, hit the two free throws with seven seconds left.

After Foutz' free throws, Michael Martin missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.

Carlos Holland added 17 for Franklin County. Carlos Martin had 15 for the Bulldogs.

Lookout Valley 69

Laurel Park 66

CHATTANOOGA - Lookout Valley (Tn.) overcame a 20-point first quarter deficit to get past Laurel Park in the second round of the Phoenix City Shootout.

Rusty Walker scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures. Robert Fears added 11 points, including two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as Lookout Valley (7-4) took a 58-53 lead it would never relinquish.

Laurel Park (2-4) got 17 points from Girard Foster and 12 each from Corey Wilson. Starting guard Darrell Wilson scored all of 11 of his points in the first quarter, but sat out the rest of the game after spraining an ankle.

Radford 48

Grayson County 47

INDEPENDENCE - Matt Linkous keyed a third-quarter run by hitting three 3-pointers to rally the Bobcats past the Blue Devils in a non-district game.

Radford (3-2) outscored Grayson County 17-10 in the third quarter after trailing 28-22 at halftime. Chuck Hubbard led the Bobcats with 22 points, as Radford coach Rick Cormany won in his first trip to Grayson County since leaving there in 1993 after serving five years as head coach.

Bryan Boyer scored 15 points for the Blue Devils.

Graham 60

Rocky Gap 54

Jeremy Mitchem came off the bench to nail three of four free throws as Graham hit nine of 13 foul shots in the fourth quarter on the way to a non-district victory over the Eagles at Rocky Gap.

The G-Men hit 18 of 32 foul shots for the game. Jacob Dews sank a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 13 points for Graham.

Will Dodson had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Eagles (3-2). and Eric Faulkner added 11 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists.

Bath County 55

Riverheads 42

GREENVILLE - Senior forward Patrick Lennon scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Bath County past Riverheads in a non-district game for its fourth straight win.

Lennon scored 12 of his 18 in the first half as the Chargers opened up a 10-point halftime lead. Bath County (6-2) led 21-20 with three minutes, 20 seconds to go in the first half before going on a 9-0 run to end the half up 30-20.

Junior Matt Williams tied a career-high with 12 points for the Chargers. Mike Wieger led Riverheads (0-5) with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

North Cross 96

Martinsville Chr. 73

Hal Johnson scored 31 points and Brian Whitaker added 28 as North Cross blasted Martinsville Christian in the first round of the North Cross Invitational at North Cross.

Johnson scored 17 of his 31 in the second half to prevent any Martinsville Christian comeback and also grabbed 14 rebounds.

Whitaker helped North Cross (2-3) open up a 13-point halftime lead by scoring 17 of his 28 in the first half and finished the game hitting six of 11 3-point attempts.

Martinsville Christian (3-3) did cut the lead to 10 in the second half behind James Philpott, who scored 13 of his 16 in the second half. Chris Meeks led Martinsville Christian with 21 points and Junior Gravely added 15.

William Watkins had 17 for North Cross, which will play Carlisle in the semifinals tonight at 8:30 p.m.

LOW MOOR - James Hughes scored 26 points and Donnie Costigan added 17 as the Mountaineers rolled past the Cougars in a non-district contest. Alleghany (6-1) led 28-24 at halftime and slowly pulled away in the second half.

Greg Entsminger scored 15 points for Covington (3-2).

George Wythe 62

John Battle 29

WYTHEVILLE - Aaron Andrews scored a game-high 15 points as George Wythe used a big second half to pound John Battle in a Hogoheegee District game.

Andrews scored nine of his 15 in the first half and grabbed 11 rebounds, but the Maroons (5-0) did the damage in the second half, outscoring John Battle 39-14.

Skip Copenhaver had 11 of his 14 points in the third quarter to lead the charge and hit all three of his 3-point attempts. Jon Irvin added 10 for the Maroons.

Wednesday's game

Brainerd 77, Laurel Park 49: Harris Walker scored 14 points to lead a balanced attack as Brainerd blew past Laurel Park in the first round of the Brainerd Invitational basketball tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn.

C.J. Black added 12 points and Johnny Goodman chipped in 11 for Brainerd (8-0).

The Lancers (2-3) got a game-high 21 points from Warrick Scott. Laurel Park played Lookout Valley (Tenn.) in the second round Thursday.
