MUSIC IN A HOLIDAY MOOD

Listeners twisting the radio dial looking for CHRISTMAS PROGRAMS should have no problems finding suitable air fare in the New River Valley:

WKEX (1430 AM), which has been airing all holiday music for the past week, continues its Christmas serenade through the weekend.

KOOL Country, WBNK (100.7 FM) and WNRV (990 AM) feature all Christmas music today and Christmas Day. Sister station WFNR (710 AM) airs Christmas music all day Sunday.

Radford University's WVRU (89.9 FM) offers a big weekend lineup of holiday programs, too. Today, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., it's "Big Band Christmas." Then, 3-5 p.m., WVRU airs "Children's Christmas." The Radford High School Christmas show follows, 5-6:30 p.m., and "Dave Horton's Variety Christmas" is broadcast 6:30-8:30 p.m. A radio drama presentation of "A Christmas Carol" begins at 8:30 p.m. On Christmas Day, "Big Band Christmas" airs 9 a.m.-3 p.m., followed by "New Age Christmas," 3-5 p.m.

Eagle Country 107, WPSK (107.1 FM) broadcasts a 19-hour special, "Christmas on Country Row," Sunday, 5 a.m.-midnight. A different country artist plays host each hour, playing holiday favorites and reminiscing about Christmases past. Bob Kingsley's "American Country Countdown" returns New Year's Day.

\ Starting Jan. 1, cable customers in Radford, Fairlawn and Christiansburg are going to see a slight increase in their CABLE SERVICE RATES. American Cable Entertainment advises that the monthly rate for broadcast basic service jumps 20 cents, while the monthly rate for the satellite programming tier goes up 35 cents. "Armchair Quarterback:" Today, 9-10 a.m., on Super 710, WFNR (710 AM), some lucky listener wins a Gator Bowl prize package, which includes transportation, hotel accommodations, tickets and even breakfast. Ricky Bustle, who returns to Virginia Tech next season as offensive coordinator, is today's guest. Levi Garrett moderates as a panel of pundits tackles listeners' questions and comments on area and regional sports.

NFL Game of the Week: Today, the New England Patriots take on the Chicago Bears at Chi-town. Air time is 12:45 p.m. on WFNR (710 AM).

Washington Redskins Football: Today, the 'Skins finish the season at Los Angeles (after failing to win a single game at home in RFK Stadium this season). Air time is 3:45 p.m. on KOOL Country, WBNK (100.7 FM) and WNRV (990 AM).

Virginia Tech Basketball: Wednesday, the Hokies meet the Vols at Tennessee. Air time is 7 p.m. Saturday, the Hokies are at home against Delaware State. Air time is 12:30 p.m. Bill Roth calls the games. The "Hokie Hotline" with Virginia Tech basketball coach Bill Foster airs Monday at 7 p.m. Local Virginia Tech Sports Network affiliates include WNRV (990 AM), WJJJ (1260 AM), WKEX (1430 AM), WRAD (1460 AM), WRIQ (101.7 FM) and WVVV (104.9 FM).

Radford University Basketball: Thursday, the Highlanders face Middle Tennessee State University at Murfreesboro. Jan. 4, they're back home against University of North Carolina at Greensboro for a Big South Conference matchup. Broadcasts begin at 7:10 p.m. on WPSK (107.1 FM). Dave Hunziker has the play-by-play for the RU Sports Network.

"On the Bench with Coach Ron Bradley:" Radford University's basketball preview show airs on game days at 9:50 a.m. and 5:50 p.m. on WPSK (107.1 FM).

"Virginia Tech Today:" Weekdays, 7:10 a.m., on WJJJ (1260 AM) and WVVV (104.9 FM).

"NASCAR LIVE " Tuesdays, 7 p.m., on KOOL Country, WBNK (100.7 FM) and WFNR (710 AM).

Blacksburg High School Basketball: Jan 5, the Indians face Salem at Blacksburg. Broadcast time is 5:45 p.m. on WKEX (1430 AM). Bob Smith does the play-by-play with help from Kelly Haughton.

This evening at 7, WNRV (990 AM) airs the Christmas Eve candlelight service live from Heritage Church, Virginia 100, Dublin.

"Long Live Rock" - airing Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on Radford University's WVRU (89.9 FM) - continues a four-part feature on the Allman Brothers Band. The second installment covers 1970-1972, including the albums "Idlewild South" and "Live at Fillmore East." Jim Newberne, 831-5180.

"The North Pole Goes Rock and Roll" - a musical by students at Gilbert Linkous Elementary School in Blacksburg - airs Tuesday, 4 p.m., and Jan. 9, 7:30 p.m., on WTOB (Channel 2), Blacksburg public-government access television.

"The Yule Log" airs on American Cable Entertainment channel 9 (Radford-Fairlawn-Christiansburg) today, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. and Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., with holiday programming from WVRU (89.9 FM) supplying the sound track.

"Community Speaking" from Radford University presents a holiday special featuring music by the Radford University Madrigal Singers and a reading of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" by James Hawes, professor emeritus of theater at Radford University.
