SALEM POET WARREN PENN KIME DIES

Salem poet and painter Warren Penn Kime Jr. died Tuesday at his home. He was 75.

Kime was born in South Carolina and grew up in Salem. He attended Andrew Lewis High School before studying at Roanoke College.

In an interview last year, Kime said he developed his love for reading and poetry when his grandmother read classic literature to him as a child.

"A poem creates a feeling or mood for the moment," he said. "It is important what the poem says to you, not what the poet says."

Kime published three volumes of poetry, including 1993's "Many Houses of Rooms," and a novel, "The Bright Circle." He is listed in "Writers of Virginia."

Kime also was a painter. His work is in the city of Salem's permanent collection and the Art Museum of Western Virginia.
