Saline implants stay on market

WASHINGTON - The Food and Drug Administration announced Friday that it will allow saline breast implants to remain on the market for at least another three years while safety studies are being conducted.

Saline implants are the only implant widely available for cosmetic augmentation or breast reconstruction. In 1992, after a bitter and emotional debate, the agency removed silicone gel breast implants from the general market after safety questions arose.

Cuba, U.S. open media ties

WASHINGTON - The Clinton administration is planning to authorize Cuba to open one or more news bureaus in the United States, and will clear the way for U.S. media to establish offices on the island nation, administration officials said Friday.

The move, expected to be announced early next year, would be a first step toward normalizing news gathering between the two countries after 25 years of sporadic access.

After Havana expelled the last U.S. correspondent based in Cuba in 1969, the United States shut down Cuba's U.S. bureaus - except at the United Nations - and reporters from both countries have had to apply for visas on a case-by-case basis ever since.

The administration also is considering taking action to expand slightly the numbers of Americans allowed to travel to Cuba for ``educational'' reasons, but no final decision has been made, the officials said.

McCurry to be press secretary

WASHINGTON - State Department spokesman Michael McCurry, an experienced Democratic operative, will take over as President Clinton's press secretary early next year, a White House official said Friday.

McCurry, 40, will replace Dee Dee Myers, who was Clinton's campaign spokeswoman and held the press secretary's job for the first two years of his administration.

McCurry's appointment had been widely anticipated. But details of the transition were not confirmed until Friday.

White House aide Mark Gearan, a former White House communications director, will serve as acting press secretary over the next few weeks.
