APCO RATES HEARING SET IN JUNE

The State Corporation Commission said Friday it has scheduled a June hearing to consider Appalachian Power Co.'s request for a rate change that will save customers a little money.

Apco filed a two-part rate change request in September. The utility asked for a rate increase of $15.7 million a year - equal to $1.88 per month for the average residential customer - but the Roanoke-based company also requested a $28 million decrease in the fuel factor component of its rates. The latter determines how much Apco can charge customers directly for the cost of coal and other fuels used to generate electricity.

The net impact of two proposals is a 36-cent monthly rate decrease for a customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity.

The new rate system, including the lower fuel factor, has been in place since Nov. 15. That means customers will receive a refund if the SCC approves a rate structure other than what Apco requested.

The hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 6 at the commission's Richmond headquarters at 1300 E. Main St. Written comments should be sent to: Clerk of the Commission, c/o Document Control Center, P.O. Box 2118, Richmond 23216. Comments should refer to case number PUE940063.
