MORE WINS FOR FLOYD COUNTY

THE BUFFALOES have two All-Group A players as well as the coach of the year in girls basketball.

Leigh-Ann Pursifull and Carrie Chaffin, who helped Floyd County extend its unbeaten streak to 56 games and win its second consecutive state championship, head the All-Group A girls' basketball team announced Friday by The Associated Press.

Pursifull, a 5-foot-8 senior who has accepted a scholarship offer from Winthrop, was named the AP's Group A player of the year. She earned a reputation as Floyd County's defensive specialist, but she also scored 13.5 points per game and averaged 4.1 assists.

Chaffin, a 6-1 senior who also has a scholarship at North Carolina-Wilmington, made 59.1 percent of her field-goal attempts and averaged 13 points and 6.6 rebounds.

The coach of the year, for the second consecutive season, is Floyd County's Alan Cantrell.

Making up the rest of the first team are Shannon Casteel of Castlewood, Rye Cove's Susie Fletcher and Leslie Wolfe of Buffalo Gap.

Casteel, a 5-5 senior who also made the first team last year, averaged 23 points this season as well as 7.9 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 5.1 steals.

Fletcher, a 5-8 junior, averaged 19 points and 13.6 rebounds.

Wolfe, a 5-6 senior, had averages of 17.3 points, nine rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.5 assists.

The second team is Melissa Cantrell of Floyd County, Tawana Lucas of Buffalo Gap, King & Queen's Tawanda King, Samantha Lester of Hurley and Goochland's Cherita Woodson.
