ADKINS, Gary Duane, 39, of Huddleston, passed away Thursday, December 22, 1994, in the Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born February 2, 1955, in Cleveland, OH, a son of the late Billy Joe Adkins and June Jackson Adkins, Calif., who survives. He was a truck driver with Great Coastal Express. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Vicki Mossman Adkins; a daughter, Danielle Adkins; a son, Cole Adkins; two sisters, Deborah Adkins, N.Y., Andrea Readman, Calif.; a brother, Andrew Adkins, Calif.; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Carlene and Kirk Miller, Huddleston, Traci and Douglas Geer, Boston, Mass.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, December 26, 1994, at 2 p.m from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Huddleston, by Dr. Frank Schmitt. Interment will follow in the Staunton Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 9 a.m. until the tim e of the service at Updike Funeral Home, Huddleston.

AVERETT, Arlene Coretta, 52, of Marietta, Ga., died Thursday, December 22, 1994. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta, Ga. with the Rev. Ernest Brown officiating. Burial will be in Cheatham Hill Cemetery in Marietta. Mrs. Averett was a resident of Marietta for 12 years. She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Marietta and Past President of The Sundance Kids Chapter City of Hope in Burbank, Calif. She was the daughter of the late Edgar P. Conrad and Mabel Conrad Robinson. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank P. and Donald D. Conrad. She is survived by two daughters, Lynette Pearson of Marietta, Ga., and Julie D. Averett of Birmingham, Ala.; two sisters, Ruth Robinson of Roanoke and Marie C. Shrader of Ringgold, Ga.; two sisters-in-law, Betty Conrad of Richmond and Sue A. CHILDRESS, Frances Shorter, 78, of Roanoke, died Friday, December 23, 1994. She was the widow of Branch S. Childress. A member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was membership chairman of the Women's Missionary Union, church librarian and a member of the Friendship Club. She was an active member of the Wasena Garden Club. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Allen B. and Amarilis S. Childress, Roanoke, a granddaughter, Monique A. Fortunato , Waipahu, Hawaii; a grandson, Allen B. Childress Jr., Richmond. HARRIS, William C. (``Bill""), 57, of Troutville, passed away Friday, December 23, 1994. He was preceded in death by his father, Eli (Jack) Harris. Mr. Harris was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of the American Legion #240 and of Cloverdale Church of The Brethren and was a life member of the N.R.A. He retired from the VA Medical Center. Surviving are his wife, Patsy R. Harris; his mother, Eva M. Harris, Fredericksburg; mother-in-law, Dorothy B. KIRBY, Roy Henry Jr. (``Bubba""), 41, of Roanoke, died Friday, December 23, 1994. He was active in the North Roanoke Recreation Club and loved to work with children. He coached baseball for seven years having won two championships and also coached basketball four years. He was a member of the Shenandoah Baptist Church. Roy owned and operated his own janitorial service and spent many years serving the Friendship Manor Community. Surviving are his wife, Diane M. Kirby and one son, Roy Henry (Chuckie) Kirby III, both of the home; his parents, Roy Henry Kirby Sr. and Dorothy D. Kirby, Florence, S.C.; a sister, Ginger Muckenfuss, Ridgeville, S.C.; his father and mother-in-law, Dewey and Juanita Mitchell, Roanoke. KNOX, Ruby Furrow, 83, of Roanoke, died Friday, December 23, 1994. Ruby was a former employee of American Viscose Corp and had been a child care worker for many years. She was widow of Oakley Wilson Knox and is survived by a daughter, Ivy Pruitt of Roanoke; granddaughters, Linda Harris, Kathy Pruitt, Vickie Hubbard and husband, Jeff, Debby Blankenship and husband, Danny all of Roanoke; grandson, Lewis Pruitt Jr., Roanoke; great-grandchildren, Scott, Tanya, John, Lloyd, Darren and Drew; great-great-grandson, Cory; brother, Ernest Furrow of Boones Mill; sisters, Hazel Nichols of Copper Hill and Nita Spradlin of Vinton. KRESS, Theresa O., 22, Daytona Beach, Fla., formerly of Roanoke, died Friday, December 23, 1994, at Holmes Regional Center, Melbourne, after a long illness. Mrs. Kress, a homemaker moved to the Daytona Beach area four years ago from Roanoke, her birthplace. She was a member of White Chapel Church of God, South Daytona. She enjoyed doing crafts, home decorating and working with children. LAUF, Valentine A., 79, of Wytheville, and formerly of Roseville, Mich., died Friday, December 23, 1994, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion Post#9. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Jordan Hall Jr., Wytheville; two sisters, Rita Appel and Edna Wuertz, both of Belleville, Ill.; one brother, Herman Lauf, Ocean Springs, Miss.; a special friend, Nell Wolcott, Wytheville; three grandchildren, Jo Ann Cotton, St. Louis, Mo., Keith Schoenherr, Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich., Artie Hall, Wytheville; five great-grandchildren also survive. MILSAPS, Laura Roseberry Elkins, 86, of Pulaski, died Friday, December 23, 1994, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born in Pulaski County on October 25, 1908, and was the daughter of the late Calvin A. Roseberry Sr. and Laura Clark Roseberrry. She was preceded in death by a husband, R. H. Milsaps. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Laura Elkins and J. B. Brillheart, Pulaski, Mildred Elkins and John T. Bolen, Pulaski, Lois Elkins and Gerald E. Bolen, Pulaski; one brother, James J. Roseberry, Abingdon; two sisters, Mrs. T. Adair (Grace) Hall, Dublin, Mrs. L. C. (Nealie) Wrights, Lenoir City, Tenn.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Mann, Indianapolis, Indiana; devoted nieces, Mrs. Marzetta Thomas and Mrs. Virginia Wright; a host of other relatives and friends. OVERSTREET, Frank Leftwich, 87, of Forest and formerly of Huddleston, died Saturday, December 24, 1994, at Va. Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Lena S. Overstreet. Born August 20, 1907, in Bedford Co. He was son of the late J. Frank and Notie Leftwitch Overstreet. He was a retired farmer and dairyman and was also retired from Virginia, Maryland Milk Producers Association. In addition, to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Barbara O. Allen of Richmond and two grandchildren, William D. Allen IV of Helena, Montana and Ann Courtney Allen of Richmond. A memorial services will be held Monday 2 p.m. at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel.

OWEN, Robert Elwood Sr., 76, of Salem, died Friday, December 23, 1994. He was the founder of Owen Plumbing & Heating Inc. and served on the Vestry at St. Paul's Episcopal Church and on the Salem City Council. He was a member of the Salem Kwanis Club and American Legion. He was a World War II Navy veteran serving in the Pacific theatre. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Brice Owen; a son, Robert E. Owen Jr. and wife, Ann; a daughter, Susan Owen Rhodes and husband, Michael, Richmond; grandchildren, Laura Brice Owen, Fort Collins, Colo. and Robert Bladon Owen, Roanoke; a brother, Richard W. Owen, Salem; sisters, Nell Owen Settles, Vinton, Mary Owen Foster, Salem, Betty Owen Cooper and Geraldine Owen Wood, both of Elliston, Joyce Owen Holcomb, Outer Banks, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. SHELOR, Bertie Marshall, 95, of Meadows of Dan, Va., died Friday, December 23, 1994, at the Patrick County Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Elroy Shelor. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Eula S. Dobyns and a son, Calvin Shelor. Surviving is one son, Dwight Shelor, Meadows of Dan; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. SHEPHERD, James Harlon, 78, of Glasgow, died Friday, December 23, 1994, in a Roanoke Hospital. He was born in Meadows of Dan, Va. April 28, 1916, the son of the late Grover P. and Dora Jessup Shepherd. He worked for the Postal Service and the U. S. Forest Service and retired after 33 years of Government Service. He was a life long farmer. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Birch Shepherd; three daughters, Elizabeth S. Slayton, Natural Bridge Station, Margaret S. Alford, Natural Bridge, Linda S. Black, Glasgow; one son, Wesley H. Shepherd, Glasgow; three sisters, Ruby S. Snow and Thelma S. Hodges both of Natural Bridge Station, Nadine S. Leighton, Blue Ridge, Texas; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, at the Falling Springs Presbyterian Church by the Rev. William Leach. WILLIAMS, Goldie Beatrice Ford, affectionately known as (``Mama Bea""), of Lynchburg, died Friday, December 23, 1994, in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the widow of Rev. J. Tommy Williams. Born in Bluefield, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Elbert W. Ford and Nora Mae Coffee. She was predeceased by a son, Thomas Eugene Williams. Mrs. Williams is survived by a daughter, Christine W. Turner, Lynchburg; a daughter-in-law, Joyce D. Williams, Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Linda G. Gilbert, Madison Heights, Joseph T. Williams, Anderson, Ind., Stephen G. Williams and David E. Williams, both of Lynchburg; four great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, December 26, 1994, in First Church of God, Hildebrand Road, Roanoke, by Rev. James B. Milner. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. WILLIAMS, James Allen, Jr., 87, of Wytheville, died Friday, December 23, 1994, in the Wythe County Community Hospital. He was born in Wytheville, the son of the late James A. Sr. and Virginia Tynes Williams. He was preceded in death by two daughters, L. Frances Porter and Elizabeth W. Sutherland. He was former Editor and Publisher of the Southwest Virginia Enterprise and Bland Messenger until 1982 when he sold his interest in the papers. He was a past member of the Board of Directors and past president of the Virginia Press Association. He served as President of the Great Lakes To Florida Highway Association for over 30 years and at the time of his death was president emeritus of this organization. He spearheaded a successful effort to get Interstate 77 routed through Wythe and Bland Counties, and was known as the ""Crusading Editor of the Southwest"" for his many community, county, and state projects. He was the recipient of numerous awards, among them, an honorary Virginia Farmers Degree, the Mount Rogers Planning District Outstanding Service Award, as Resolution from the Virginia Legislature for his outstanding contribution to the State of Virginia, a special scroll of recognition for Outstanding Service to the Commonwealth by former Governor Mills Godwin Jr., Distinguished Service Award by the Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers, and several Honors from the Wytheville Jaycees. Mr. Williams was instrumental in organizing the Men's Interdenominational Club and helped organize and served as director and President of what is now the Wytheville-Wythe-Bland Chamber of Commerce and was a lifetime director emeritus. He also organized the program of Sandlot Football for Wytheville, the forerunner of the Town Recreation Program. He was a former member of the Wythe County Community Hospital Board of Directors, former member, director and president of the Wythe County Kiwanis Club, former member of the Wytheville Lions Clubs. He was a member, Sunday School teacher, deacon, life deacon, trustee and lay preacher of the Wytheville Baptist Church and the Fellowship Hall of the church was named in his honor in 1983. Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Dora B. Williams; one son, James. A. ""Shine"" Williams III, both of Wytheville; four grandchildren, Frances Barbour of Clayton, N.C., James B. ""Jay"" Sutherland of Blacksburg, Virginia P. Batemen of Laurenburg, N.C., Tynes S. ""Ty"" King of Wytheville; three great-grandchildren, Kaitlin C. Sutherland, Virginia Frances Bateman, Matthew Harrison Sutherland. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 27, 1994 at 2 p.m. at the Wytheville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Barry Losey officiating. Interment will follow in the West End Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, or at the residence at any time.
