WARDENS RIDING HIGH IN SADDLE

State game wardens have a new mount to chase down outdoor outlaws in Alleghany County. It is an all-terrain vehicle, presented to the Department of Game and Inland Fishereis by a group of outdoor organizations.

"You can get into an area so much quieter with it and you can cover an area quicker," said Jay Dowdy, a warden assigned to the county. He expects to use the vehicle to patrol the Jackson River below Gathright dam and to keep tabs on game poachers.

Clubs that contributed to the purchase were the Appalachian Long Spurs Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, the Alleghany-Covington Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, Mad Ann Rifles, Millboro Ruritan Club, Alleghany Gun Club and the Alleghany Houndsman Association.
