FIRE DAMAGES CONVENIENCE STORE

A grease fire caused extensive smoke damage Monday night at a convenience store on Peters Creek Road.

The fire, which began about 10:15 p.m., was contained to the area around a deep fryer in the Village Cafe, Roanoke Fire Captain Audi Ferris said. The restaurant was not open Monday.

Ferris said the fire was easily extinguished and did little damage to the restaurant's kitchen, but the large amount of smoke caused an estimated $40,000 in damage to the adjoining Village Store.

Ferris said a Health Department worker told him most, if not all, of the store's merchandise will have to be discarded.
