NEW RIVER PEOPLE

SHERRY R. LeMASTER, formerly a development officer at Virginia Tech, has been hired as a senior major-gifts officer at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine-Baptist Hospital Medical Center, a part of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.

LeMaster has 14 years' experience in development and higher education. She is also a consultant to the U.S. Department of Education.

The Transportation Technical Advisory Committee of the New River Valley Planning District Commission has announced that ROBERT P. ASBURY Jr., Radford city manager, has been elected committee chairman and ROBERT J. LYONS, Pulaski assistant town manager, was elected vice chairman.

The committee coordinates transportation planning efforts for the city of Radford, the counties of Montgomery, Floyd, Giles, Pulaski and their incorporated towns.

MICHELLE LOOKADOO, 15, of Radford; and MARJI ROSE,16, LANA BEEX, 14, and DESIREE REESE, 15, all of Blacksburg, recently performed with the Southwest Virginia Ballet Company in "The Snow Maiden."

The ballet company was founded by TERRI POST and is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the study, performance and appreciation of dance.

SANDRA WIMMER CHAPIN, general registrar of Montgomery County, has been awarded the title of certified professional general registrar under a program administered the the University of Virginia's Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service and the Division of Continuing Education.

The program takes a minimum of three years to complete and requires a combination of extensive education and governmental experience.

Chapin must complete an additional 60 hours of continuing education every four years to remain certified.

The Radford-Montgomery Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 776 recently awarded the following VFW Citations: R. KEVIN SMITH, policeman of the year; JEFFERY S. HARLESS, paramedic of the year; and Capt. CHARLES SCOTT GOSNELL, fireman of the year.

ROY THORPE, Montgomery's county attorney, was elected secretary-treasurer of the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia Inc. at its recent fall meeting.

The group is Virginia's principal professional association of attorneys representing cities, counties and towns, as well as attorneys in private practice who specialize in local government matters.

It has 482 members, representing 200 separate jurisdictions and firms.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY 4-H recently held its Achievement Night program and recognized youth and adults for outstanding performance. Leaders honored for years of service include JAMES YATES, 50 years; MARIE HANCOCK for 25 years; BEVERLY LINEWEAVER and WILL McELFRESS for 20 years; EUGEN LINK, CHARLES PRESTON, WANDA PRESTON and EARLINE RAINER-JEANES for 15 years; KENNETH DAWSON and RITA SULLIVAN for 10 years; JAMES DOOLEY, PAT HUFF, KENDRA KOHL, SUSAN LESTER, JANET LINK, MICHAEL MARTIN, CARRIE McBRIDE, CECIL McBRIDE, DOTTIE McKINNON, CAROLYN MOORE, JANET SHELBURNE, BILL McKINNON, DELORES WALL, SAMUEL WALL, CAROL WOMBLE, JAMES ROBERTS, VALERIE MYERS, RICHARD SHELBURNE and NINA STILES for five years.

Special guests included: Larry Linkous, chairman of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors; David Tuggle, of the Rotary Club of Montgomery County; and Bill McDonald, member of the Virginia Extension Leadership Council.

The Teen Leaders of Tomorrow members were co-hosts of the program along with the 4-H Administrative Board and the Montgomery County Cooperative Extension Staff.

LEESA MILLER of Christiansburg was honored by the Mental Health Association of Virginia as the recipient of the statewide Community Service Award for mental health volunteers.

Miller has volunteered for the association for 10 years and has been program coordinator for Operation Santa Claus for four years.

This year, Miller made it possible for 100 gift boxes to be sent to patients at Southwest Virginia Mental Health Institute and 20 boxes locally.

CONNIE ANDERSON, on behalf of the Blacksburg AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN, donated a collection of 29 new books on women leaders, writers and role models to the Blacksburg Middle School Library.

The entire collection is available for use by the Montgomery County school system.

HERMAN G. BARTLETT JR., ROY O. VICKERS JR., PEGGY ARRINGTON and LOU S. HERRMANN from Montgomery County Public School System attended the annual Virginia Association of School Superintendents and the Virginia School Boards Association conference.

This year's theme - "A Tradition of Progress" - focused on the knowledge and skills necessary for initiating educational changes to meet the needs of local communities.

DEE J. DANNER, a local dentist who also is a hot-air balloon pilot, recently was elected president of the Carolinas Balloon Association.

Danner will serve a two-year term with the organization, which represents North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

The Radford City School of Practical Nursing program award scholarships to DENISE TALLANT of Radford, CINDY LINKOUS of Blacksburg, ANGIE QUESENBERRY of Pulaski, DEBRA ROAN of Dublin, and TONIA COCHRAN and JENNIFER SIMPKINS, both of Christiansburg. The scholarships are funded by St. Albans Hospital Foundation, the Radford Community Health Foundation and Wheatland Hills Retirement Center Inc.

THE SOUTHSIDE GARDEN CLUB held its December meeting at the home of Mrs. Robert Cannell.

Mrs. David Stoeckle, a new member, was welcomed. Guest speaker was local artist Carloe Carrera Davis.

Members receiving blue ribbons for artistic design and for gift wrapping were Mrs. Donald Bloss, Mrs. Cannell, Mrs. Thomas Caceci, Mrs. Lynn Glover, Mrs. R.W. Hendricks, Mrs. Daniel Ludwig, Mrs. Gerald Robinson, Mrs. E.V. Russell and Mrs. R.L. Simpson.

Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Simpson also received blue ribbons for exhibiting horticulture specimens.
