CALF CARCASS LEFT OUTSIDE WAREHOUSE

Someone slaughtered a calf Monday night and left the carcass outside a Roanoke warehouse, police said Tuesday.

After an employee called police to report a strange noise outside the building, a police officer who responded to the warehouse on Kerns Avenue Southwest about 7 p.m. found the carcass of a 500-pound calf next to a loading dock.

Evidence suggested that the animal was slaughtered in a grassy area next to the warehouse, police said, then pulled to the loading dock to be butchered. A police news release stated that animal control officer called to the scene agreed there was an attempt to butcher the calf ``for probable beef purpose.''

Authorities believe the calf was stolen from a rural area and taken to Roanoke.

A security guard was kicked and beaten Christmas night by young men at a Northwest Roanoke apartment complex. Brook Anthony McKnight, an employee of Professional Security Co., told police he approached the group drinking beer outside Westwood Apartments about 11:45 and asked for their identification.

As the men turned on him, McKnight fled but was overtaken, knocked to the ground and beaten. He was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

A 22-year-old man was treated at Community Hospital after a bullet grazed his forehead early Saturday. Police said Sean Word, of Virginia Avenue, was shot during an argument with a man about 2:30 a.m. on the 700 block of Williamson Road.

A car was struck by gunfire as a woman drove by a fight between two men Saturday morning on the 1900 block of Dale Avenue Southeast. Two shots struck the passenger door, and one bullet was found inside the car. The woman and two passengers were not injured.
