NAVY SEAMAN DAVID A. BARNES of Roanoke recently returned to San Diego from a six-month deployment to the Indian and Western Pacific oceans and the Persian Gulf.

Barnes, who worked with the USS Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group, took part in operations off the coast of Somalia, in Rwanda and in the Persian Gulf.

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS BRIAN D. BAILEY and NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS GARY W. CAMPBELL are halfway through a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf. Aboard the guided missile frigate USS John L. Hall, the two took part in the operations supporting international sanctions against Iraq.

Campbell is a 1988 graduate of Patrick Henry High School; Bailey is a 1989 graduate of Northside High School.

NAVY PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS GARY L. HAWKS and NAVY FIREMAN CHRISTOPHER T. WADE recently returned from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Red Sea with the guided missile cruiser USS San Jacinto.

The two worked with the USS George Washington Joint Task Group to perform duty off the coast of Bosnia and enforce international sanctions against Iraq.

Hawks, son of Joyce F. Hawks of Salem and Ray Hawks of Moneta, is a 1982 graduate of Salem High School. Wade, son of Dathea H. Wade of Roanoke, is a 1991 graduate of William Fleming High School.

ARMY PVT. JAMES M. WILHELM, son of Larry and Bonnie Bailey of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C.

Wilhelm is a 1994 graduate of William Byrd High School.

ARMY 1ST LT. DAVID B. WOMACK, son of Roy and Kathy Womack of Vinton, has been awarded the Expert Infantryman Badge.

Womack is a 1988 graduate of William Byrd High School and a 1992 graduate of Virginia Military Institute.

THE USS GEORGE WASHINGTON JOINT TASK GROUP recently returned from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas and the Persian Gulf.

Roanokers participating in the deployment were: Navy Airman Apprentice Brian D. Mann, son of Laurel Williams of Roanoke; Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Brian W. Hall, son of Ben and Sandra Hall of Roanoke; Navy Chief Petty Officer James W. Clendenen, son of James W. Clendenen Sr. of Roanoke; and Navy Airman Timothy J. Sherman, son of Sarah L. Sink of Roanoke and Gary Sherman of Vinton.

Crew members performed duty off the coast of Bosnia and enforced the "no-fly zone" over southern Iraq.

NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT MARK C. LUCAS, son of Donald and Judith Lucas of Roanoke, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Orlando, Fla.

Lucas is a 1994 graduate of Northside High School.
