ROANOKE'S TAYLOR EARNS GOLF VICTORY

Lee Taylor, a 13-year-old from Roanoke, won the 47th annual Donald Ross Junior Invitational golf tournament at Pinehurst (N.C.) Country Club.

Taylor won the 12- to 14-year-old age group by shooting a 74 in the first round and a 75 in the second round on the par-72 course to earn a three-stroke victory.

In other sports news in the region:

David Wayne Lawhorn of Roanoke rolled a 300 game Wednesday night at Lee-Hi Lanes in Salem.

It was the second 300 game this year for the Roanoker, who has been bowling for seven years.

Lawhorn, 23, carries a 206 average in the Wednesday mixed league at Lee-Hi.

The starting times for the Virginia Tech women's basketball team will serve as host for the fifth annual Diamond Club Classic women's basketball tournament at Virginia Tech have been changed.

In the first game today, fourth-ranked North Carolina, the 1994 NCAA champion, will take on Rhode Island at 2 p.m. Virginia Tech will meet Furman at 4 p.m. The consolation game will be played at 2 p.m. Friday, with the championship game to follow at 4 p.m.

The Hokies have won the past three Diamond Club Classic championships, including a 77-76 thriller over Appalachian State in last year's final. The Hokies' games can be heard in the Blacksburg area on WUVT (90.7 FM).
