Not to worry. McGuire went to the bench, but by the time he re-entered the game, Byrd had secured a 67-57 victory over host Salem.
That's because junior forward Chris Childress went on a rampage. Childress scored 12 of his game-high 26 points to help the Terriers maintain the 11-point lead they had when McGuire got into foul trouble.
Mayo Wilson, Byrd's point guard, added three of his four 3-point goals during the streak.
Salem was paced by Kevin Garst with 18 points and Chad Pendleton with 15. Matt Woolwine, the Spartans' second-leading scorer, did not play because of a back injury.
Kevin Tuck helped put the game in the victory column for Byrd. First, he hit a 10-foot jumper. Then, he got a steal and a layup with four minutes remaining that gave the Terriers an insurmountable 61-47 lead.
FIFTH PLACE: Franklin County used a big second quarter to put some space between itself and Parry McCluer on the way to a 69-56 victory.
The Eagles' Bradley McCall hit two of his game-high five 3-point goals during the period. K.C. Hancock scored nine of his game-high 20 points in the quarter.
Parry McCluer got 14 points from Mike McElroy and 12 from Brandon Garrett.
SEVENTH PLACE: Fieldale-Collinsville had little trouble with winless Rockbridge County as the Cavaliers came away with a 65-48 victory, their first triumph in the tournament this year.
Nat Law scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half to lead Fieldale-Collinsville. Ricky Wright, a sophomore guard, and Ro Hoyle led the Wildcats with 13 each.
