UNISYS TO CUT JOBS

Unisys Corp., one of the nation's leading makers of mainframe computers, will cut 4,000 jobs worldwide next year while shifting its focus to desktop computers and services, the company said Thursday.

Unisys, an 8-year-old company that has struggled to be competitive, cited slow business in Europe and a weak market for mainframes, the central processing units for large computers. The company employs 33,000 people in the United States and 13,900 abroad.

The company could not say Thursday how the cuts would affect the Unisys office on Bernard Drive in Southwest Roanoke County.

It was not clear where the cuts will be made and which offices will be affected.

Spokesman Joe Barrett said the 4,000 total figure is "soft" and that about half of the jobs to be cut will be outside the United States. It was unclear whether the cuts would be done through layoffs, early retirements or attrition.

Unisys expects the job cuts to save it $200 million by the end of 1995, the company said in a statement from its headquarters in Blue Bell, a Philadelphia suburb.
