Kasey Renee Tolley, of Natural Bridge Station, was riding in a car with her grandmother when the vehicle struck the right passenger side of a truck driven by Francis Lee Straub, 47, of Lexington.
The accident occurred at 12:55 p.m. The child was taken to Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington, and later flown to the University of Virginia's Children's Hospital. She died at 8:35 p.m., Trooper E.A. Fischer said. The girl was not wearing a seat belt.
Fischer said the child's grandmother, Edna Thomas Johnson, 59, of Natural Bridge, was driving north on Virginia 759 ``at a high rate of speed.'' The truck was traveling south on Virginia 759 and attempting to turn left onto Virginia 799 when it was hit.
The accident still was under investigation and no tickets had been issue, Fischer said.
Straub and Johnson were not injured. Greg Wayne Gardner, 18, a passenger in the truck, had minor injuries.
