The sophomore guard had kept the Golden Eagles in their game against the Lancers before Camden switched to a triangle-and-two defense to cut off Hoggatt and Cornelius Foxx as Amherst County pulled away for a 69-54 Seminole District boys' basketball victory.
Hoggatt had 29 points after three quarters and had beaten the box-and-one defense that couldn't cover both he and Foxx. In the third quarter, the two combined for 18 points and pulled Staunton River within two. In the final period, Amherst County (6-1 overall and in the district) didn't let Hoggatt shoot the ball until he took a pair of free throws with just over two minutes left.
``We felt going in [that] they're a two-man offense and we had to shut them down to win,'' said Camden. The triangle-and-two ``forced them to do some things I'm sure [Staunton River coach] Eddie Carter didn't expect because of what we threw at them.''
Sophomore Cam Jackson did the job on Hoggatt. The football linebacker, who might have been Amherst County's best defensive player on the Group AA Division 4 state runner-up, was very physical against Hoggatt.
``It was a very physical game. Much too physical,'' said Carter, who earned one of three technicals dealt in a game that also saw 54 personals whistled on the two teams.
``I'm disappointed the game was that physical. Hunter's a heck of a player if it's a basketball game. When it got to be a football game, just look at him out there.''
Hoggatt hit 7 of 15 shots - he was 4-of-5 in the second half. He also hit 14 of 15 free throws, including his final 13. Foxx, though, had an off night before Greg Adams took him on defensively. He had missed his first five shots in the opening quarter.
Amherst County was paced by guard Scott Christian with 25 points. The Lancers used 11 players and virtually wore down a Staunton River team that didn't have as much bench strength. The Eagles are 4-3 overall and in the district.
