AKERS, Aletha Ola Duncan, 89, of Christiansburg, passed away Saturday, December 31, 1994 in Montgomery Regional Hospital. She was born April 11, 1905 in Floyd County, the eldest child of the late Enoch Jefferson and Leona Allen Duncan of Alum Ridge. She was an alumni of Radford State Normal Teachers College (Radford University) and taught school in Floyd County. She also worked for several years at the Star Market Grocery in Christiansburg. She was a member of the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren and former member of the White Rock Church of the Brethren, where she held several offices. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Akers, a son, Calvin E. Akers, and infant son and daughter, and four brothers. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Frances M. and Alfred Holcomb of Richmond; a daughter, Ruth A. Akers of Radford; three sons and daughters-in-law, Leon D. and Virgie Akers, Christiansburg, Eugene and Thelma Akers, Roanoke, Larry I. and Sharon Akers, Sterling, Va.; and a son, Kenneth A. Akers of Vienna, Va. and Port Orange, Florida; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Alfred J. and Ruby Duncan, Christiansburg, Edgar and Betty Duncan, Floyd, Marley and Thelma Duncan, Baltimore, Md.; a sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Draper Dulaney, Alum Ridge; a sister, Esther L. Griffith, Christiansburg; former son-in-law, Larry H. Dobbins, Radford; 15 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild; and three sisters-in-law. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 1995, from the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren, by the Rev. Donald Peters. Interment will follow in the family cemetery in Alum Ridge. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday evening at the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home.

BAKER, William Paris, 73, of Dublin, died Sunday, January 1, 1995. Funeral 2 p.m. Tuesday, Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski.

BASS, Patsy Harvey, 66, of Marion, died Friday, December 30, 1994 in Smyth County Community Hospital after a short illness. Mrs. Bass was born January 2, 1928, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Rosetta Harvey of Max Meadows, Va. She attended Radford College and R.P.I. She was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church. She is survived by her husband, Joe R. Bass, Jr. of Marion, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Jane Bass-Koris and Richard Koris of Pittsburg, Pa.; one son and daughter-in-law, Gordon H. and Nancy H. Bass of Richmond, Va.; one granddaughter, Ariel Madison Koris of Pittsburg, Pa. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 3, 1995 at 11 a.m. in Christ Episcopal Church, with the Reverend Michael J. Zumpf officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. CHILDRESS, Elsie Janney, 86, of Riner, passed away Saturday, December 31, 1994 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Survivors include two daughters, Nora Ethel Flinchum, Riner, Ellen Morris, Blacksburg; one brother, Oakey Janney, Roanoke; two sisters, Mary Allen, Angelina Whitehead, both of Copper Hill; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, January 2, 1995, at the Maberry Funeral Home Chapel, Floyd, with the Rev. Carl Ratcliffe and the Rev. Bryan Childress officiating. CLARK, Ruth Andelle, 59, of Buena Vista, died Saturday, December 31, 1994 in a Roanoke hospital. She was born in Augusta county June 5, 1935, the daughter of the late Wallace and Mable Allen Painter. She was employed by Long John Silvers in Lexington Surviving are three daughters, Selena Clark, Collierstown, Kazza Clark and Simone Clark, both of Buena Vista; three sons, Anthony Clark, Natural Bridge Station, Timothy Clark and Bernard Clark III, both of Staunton; three sisters, Reithe Campbell, Rockbridge Co., Dot Maybush and Gaitha Price, both of Augusta Co.; one brother, Ronnie Painter, Augusta Co.; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lomax Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Tom Clark. Entombment will follow in the Green Hill Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

COULLING, Mary Selina, of Williamsburg, died Saturday, December 31, 1994 at her home. Miss Coulling was born in Tazewell, Va. and had been a Williamsburg resident for the past 40 years. She was a teacher of elementary grade school at Matthew Whaley School and at schools in Wise and Tazewell, Virginia. In her early teaching career, she taught at Norris, Tenn. in connection with the TVA Norris Dam Project. Miss Coulling received her undergraduate degree from Longwood College in Farmville, Va. and her Master's Degree from Peabody Teachers College in Nashville, Tenn. Later course work was completed at the University of Chicago. She was a member of the Abingdon Episcopal Church in Gloucester and the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. Survivors include two nephews, L. R. Coulling Jr. of Bluefield, W. Va. and Sidney M. B. Coulling of Lexington, Va.; four great-nieces; two great-nephews; two great-great-nieces and two great-great-nephews. A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, January 3, 1995 at 2 p.m. in the Jeffersonville Cemetery in Tazewell, Va. by the Rev. Tom Mustard. A memorial service for her and her late sister, Miss Martha D. Coulling, will be held at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church in Williamsburg at a date to be announced. CRAWFORD, Ohma B., 82, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, January 1, 1995. He was a member of the Hollins Road Church of the Brethren, retired from Griffin Inc., and Norfolk and Southern. He was predeceased by a son, Kenneth E. Crawford. Surviving are his wife, Ruby Huffman Crawford; a son, Stephen R. Crawford of North Carolina; granddaughter, Shannon M. Crawford; a brother, Warner D. Crawford, New Castle; four sisters, Delena Harrelson, Roanoke, Verena Hanna, Sadie Wolf, both of New Castle, Norine Crowder, Fincastle; special brother-in-law, Clyde Clark, Burnt Chimney. FRANK, Robert William, Jr., 45, of Huddleston, passed away on Thursday, December 29, 1994, in Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Rochester, N.Y. on October 19, 1949, a son of the late Robert W. Frank Sr., and Lucille Magan Frank who survives, of Batavia, N.Y. He was a Vietnam veteran, a welder for Aerofin Corporation, and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Batavia, N.Y. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Linda Smart Frank, Huddleston; three daughters, Tracy Ann Frank, Miami Fla., Alicia Crystal Frank and Adrienne Nadine Frank, both of Huddleston; four sisters, Elizabeth Marks and Christine Brownell, both of Oakfield, N.Y., Rose Koch, Alexandria, N.Y., Patricia Brinkman, Batavia, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews, including Jimmy Marks of Rustburg. GIPSON, Gladys McGuire, 62, of Route 6, Bedford, died Sunday, January 1, 1995 in the Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was born in Bedford County on September 24, 132, a daughter of the late Seth Elbert McGuire Sr. and Ora Cook McGuire. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Lee ``Hoot"" Gipson and on e brother, Jake Caldwell McGuire. Gladys was a member of Thaxton Baptist Church and was employed by Bedford Photo Finishers. She is survived by three brothers, Seth E. McGuire Jr., Edward L. McGuire and William T. McGuire; five sisters, Josephine M. Turpin, Evelyn M. Overstreet, Christine M. Bobbitt, Helen M. Overstreet and Mary Lou Gardner, all of Bedford; several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 1995, at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Michael R. DuVal and the Rev. Johnson Gupton officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery. HAHN, Edith Cassell, of Warm Hearth Village, Blacksburg, died Tuesday, December 27, 1994 in Montgomery Regional Hospital. Born October 1, 1923 in Norristown, PA., she was the daughter of the late William Freed Cassel and Theodosia James Powell Cassel. She graduated from Drexel University in Philadelphia with a B.S. in Home Economics. She was a Registered Dietitian in Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. hospitals, and worked as a volunteer in the hospital in Blacksburg. She married Charles William Hahn (now deceased) in 1947. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Janet Hahn and Charles Kugler; and two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Susan Hahn, Kenneth and Irene Hahn; four grandchildren , Stephanie, Brian, Julie and Karen; and three sisters, Helen Felton, Eleanor Mark, and Grace Goering. A memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd Church of the Brethren, Blacksburg, VA on Saturday, January 7 at 3 p.m. with Pastor Marianne Pittman officiating. HICKERSON, Joan Griffing, 75, of Radford, formerly of West Haven, Connecticut, died Friday, December 30, 1994 at her residence. She was a retired employee of West Haven Library. She was a lifetime member of Christ Episcopal Church in West Haven. She had recently attended Grace Episcopal Church in Radford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Hickerson Sr. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Tim Sweet, Radford; four sons and daughters-in-law, Robert D. Hickerson Jr. and Alexis of Concord, CA., James F. Hickerson and Cynthia Stevens of Springfield, MI., Peter F. Hickerson and Ann of Navato, CA., and Christopher S. Hickerson and Robin of West Haven, CT. MORGAN, James E, (``Jim""), 72, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, December 31, 1994, in a local hospital. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Morgan was known to many in the valley as ``The Lamplighter"". He was a charter member of North Roanoke Baptist Church, and served as chairman of the church's first building committee. He retired from Woodrum Airport after working for many years as a meteorologist. Jim was a former member of the Williamson Road Kiwanis Club, and during his membership, he co-initiated the Key Clubs at Roanoke Valley high schools. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Fred Morgan. Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. Surviving are his wife, Ava W. Morgan; daughter, Pam Morgan, Pamlico Beach, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Mary Jaye Morgan, Roanoke; grandchildren, Mary Margaret and Emily Morgan; sister, Ethel Mohler, Salem; brother, Joe Morgan, Charlotte, N.C.; a number of nieces and nephews. ROBERTSON, Thelma Bohon, (``Ted""), 74, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, January 1, 1995, in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of Floyd A. Robertson. Born in Bent Mountain, Va., she was a daughter of the late Thomas T. and Berta Fralin Bohon. She was a member of Timberlake United Methodist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Art Robertson of Evington, Va.; one daughter, Cynthia R. Martin, Madison Heights, Va.; four brothers, Rufus Bohon of Hillsville, Clemmons Bohon of Lynchburg, Douglas Bohon of Hopewell, Va., Harry Bohon of Florida; one sister, Mary Patterson of Lynchburg; three grandchildren. STARKEY, Earl M., 96, of Buena Vista, died Thursday, December 29, 1994 in a Buena Vista Nursing Home. He was born in Salem, March 24, 1898, the son of the late Samuel and Julia Williams Starkey. He came to Buena Vista in 1920 with the Blue Ridge Tannery and became manager. He served the company for 33 years. He was a member of the Buena Vista Baptist Church, having served on the Board of Deacons for over 40 years and was one of three trustee having served many years. He organized a Men's Bible Class, which he taught for 38 years. He served Buena Vista on the School Board, City Council, the Draft Board, Commissioner of Revenue and President of the Peoples Bank. He was one of the organizers of Virginia International Co.-this company ships large quantities of crude oil from Indonesia, and was one of the organizers of Southern Industrial Associates, Inc. Mr. Starkey was preceded in death by his wife, Marvel Brown Starkey and a daughter, Jean S. Schreiner. Surviving are one grandson and wife, Vernon M. and Betty Schreiner, Wellington, Fla.; and two great-grandchildren, Amanda and Christopher Schreiner. Funeral services will be conducted 11 am. Tuesday at the Buena Vista Baptist Church, by the Rev. Dr. Chip Pendleton. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery. THOMPSON, Elizabeth Ann, 68, of Oriskany, New York, died Saturday, December 31, 1994. Miss Thompson was a former resident of Giles County. She was a retired employee of the H.W. Woolworth Co. She was born in Buchanan, Va. on November 1, 1926, and was a daughter of the late Cecil and Nina Thompson. She is survived by one sister, Mary Louise Thompson of Marion, Va.; two cousins, James B. Thompson of Beaumont, Calif., Ellison S. Robinson III of Richmond, Va. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 4, 1994, at 11 a.m. in the Birchlawn Abbey Chapel, with the Rev. WIKLE, Laura Agnes Eversole, 88, of Malin Health Care Center, Wytheville, and formerly of Dublin, died Sunday, January 1, 1995 in the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late William and Emily Rogers Eversole. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Arthur E. Wikle, and two brothers, Elmer Eversole and Douglas Eversole, and a sister. She was a member of the Dublin United Methodist Church. She is survived by three stepsons and wives, Evert L. and Mary Jo Wikle, Dublin, Paul E. and Bobbie Wikle, Mayodan, N.C., John W. and Wanda Wikle, Townsend, Tenn.; one sister-in-law, Mary Eversole, Pulaski; two nieces, Marcia Clark, Pulaski and Emily Phillippi, Wytheville; nine stepgrandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 3, 1995 at 10 a.m. in the Barnett Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Patterson and the Rev. Henry Horton officiating.
